SASH HOLDER.
l ATION FILED JULY 3,1
' Patented Nov. 13, 1917.
AMOS W. BOYNTON, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
SASH-HOLDER.'
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 19717.
Application led July B, 1917. Serial No. 178,386.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, AMos W. BoYN'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forth lVorth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain useful mprovements in Sash-Holders, of whichv the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rlhis invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as builders hardware, and more particularly relates to a sash holder.
The present invention has for its principal aim and object to provide a sash holder of such a construction that when applied in position between a closed sash and the adjacent stile, the sash will be prevented from being raised from the outside.
More particularly, this invention resides in the provision of a sash holder of the above character wherein the component parts are novel in form and coperate with each other for holding the sash to which it is applied in a closed position.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the eiiiciency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodimentk of the invention. Tt is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in position on the stile and window sash, partly in section;
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the invention.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is illustrated a window frame indicated in its entirety by the numeral 1 while slidably mounted therein is a window sash 2 removably held in a closed position by improved sash holders indicated generally by the numeral 3.
The sash holder in the present instance may be said to consist of a supporting arm 4 from the inner end of which depends a wedging shank 5 for frictional engagement between one edge ofthe sash and the adjacent stile 6 of the window frame 1. The arm 4 and the shank 5 are preferably formed from a single piece of metal bent to form an angle, the arm being flattened at its outer end as indicated by the numeral 7 and provided with an opening 8 in which is fulcrumed the inner end of a lever 9 through the instrumentality of a pin 10. This lever is of a length slightly longer than the length of the supporting arm being provided at its eX- treme outer end with an opening 11. A
double-ended shoe 12 is nowprovided and is pivoted intermediate its ends by means of a suitable fastening device 13 in the opening 11 on the outer end of the lever and on the same side that the supporting arm is disposed so as to be positioned directly through the arm. rlhe shoe is constructed of a single piece of metal which is rst bent into an arcuate form as indicated by the numeral 14 and is flattened transversely upon opposite sides intermediate its ends as indicated by the numeral 15 while the respective engaging ends are beveled as indicated by the numeral 16 so as to facilitate an effective biting engagement of these ends with the stile when the lever 9 is swung toward the stile subsequent to the mounting of the supporting arm as mentioned.
In view of the foregoing description it is thought that a further detail description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is thought that the advantages of the invention willbe readily apparent.
Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed -as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A sash holder including a supporting arm, a shank depending therefrom and adapted to be arranged for frictional engagernent between the edge of the sash and the adjacent stile7 a lever pivoted to the outer end of the arm, and a shoe pivoted to the outer end of the lever for biting engagement With the adjacent edge of the Windowv sash subsequent to the application of the sash and the swinging of the lever.
2. A sasli holder including a supporting` arm, a shank it'orined integral with and depending from the inner end thereof for engagement between the Window sash and the adjacent stile so as to dispose the arm above the upper edge of the sash, the outer end Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner` of Patents.
of the arni being flattenedy a lever pivoted to the outer end of the arm, and a double ended shoe flattened upon opposite sides intermediate its end and pivoted intermediate its end to the outer end of the lever on the saine side as the arm so as to be disposed above tlie arni and arranged in biting engage-nient with the adjacent face of tlie stile subsequent to the swinging of tlie lever to- Ward the stile.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature.
