TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CNQERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. F. 'SM1rrEN, ofthe ctyof Brooklyn, in the county of.Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new arid useful Improvement in Breast-Pins, Brooches, 8vo.; and I do hereby declare that Athe fllowing is a full and correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon. Y I u i In breast-pins' and brooches, as commonly made, the rivet-pin at thejoint, between the tongue and body of the breast-pin or brooch, becomes loose by wearand falls out, thereby detaching the body of the pin from the tongue, and thus many pins are lost. Breast-pins and brooches are so frequently lost fromthis cause that a guard-chain and additional pin are frequently attached tothem for safety; but this is aconsiderable additional expense, besides the trouble of fastening the two pins, and the inconvenience of the dangling guard-chain, the use of which is also objected to by many to whom it is distasteful. v
The 'nature of my invention consists, in combining, with the body of abreast-pin or brooch and the tongue,
Lt the joint, a'guard, consisting of `a loop of wire or plate-metal fastened to the'body of the pin,- at or near the joint, and embracing the tongue near the joint closely enough to prevent it from escaping, andat the same time loosely enough to allow the tongue to work freely, .thereby securing the tongue to the body of the breastpin or brooch in cae the rivet-pin should work out'.
But .in order to more particularly describeiny invention,'I will refer to the accompanying drawings, of whch- 4 Figure 1 is aplan view of a brooch with my improvement.A
Figure 2, a side view of thesame.
` Figures 3 and 4, plan view and section,`show ing the-operation of the guard in securing the breast-pin when the rivet-pin is removed.
The drawings show the body a of the breast-pin or brooch, withsa tongue, b, jointed to it inthe usual way;
that is,a small plate is soldered to the end of the tongue, and underneath it `is soldered a short vsection of a tube or pipe, c, corresponding in size with thetwo opposite short sections oi' piping or tubing d d, soldered to the body of tlie breast-pin, so that a hinge-joint is made between the body and tongue by means ofa'rivet-pn passing through the three short tubes. A
The tongue, being enlarged at thcjoint by the-attachment of the plate and tube constitutingits portion of the hinge, is confined to the body, whenever the rivet-pin falls ou't, by my improved guard or bridle, which may bo merely a bent loop of wire, e, of'the form shown in the drawings, embracing the tongue 4near the joint, and fastened by soldering the ends to the body of the breast-pin or brooch, or to that part of the hingedjoint which i' is fast to the body. When the breast-pin or brooch is fastened in a shirt-front, or other article of dress, the
loops of the guard, being smaller than the joint-end of the tongue,prevent the brooch or breast-'pin from escaping from the tongue when the rivet-pin of the joint comes out.
'The guard or bridle may be made a part of the j eintbei'ore it is soldered on the pin, or it may be attached afterwards, and formed either 'ot'y wire or piercedplate-metal.' To open-back settings it may be'attached by extending the ends of the loop, guard, or bridle to leither side, and `soldering them.
.The Aadvantages of my inventionjar'e, first, that 'brooches providedwith it may be wornwithout a safety-pin andchain, as it is impossible for a brooch to be lost in consequence of the rivet falling out; second, the loopguard acts as a check above the joint,reli,eving the joint from strain, and protecting it from being broken olf: third, it prevents thejoint from wearing loose, as it stops-to a great extent the lateral play.
I claim as of my invention and improvement inbreast-pi'ns, brooches, and similar articles- A guard or bridle, embracing the tongue near the joint, in combination with the body andtongue, substantially as described, whereby the breast-pin or brooch is securelyhcld, and preventedfrom being lost by the wearer, should the rivet-pin of the joint come out.
