BED-BOTTOM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1905.
Application filed September 14, 1905. Serial No. 278,366.
1'0 all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN HOEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements-in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification. EMy invention relates to improvements in flexible elastic fabric for bottoms for beds,
couches, and like structures.
It consists in a combination of parts and in details of construction, which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan showing the yokes continued to form transverse extensions 2. Fig. 2 shows alternate yokes terminating in loops and the attachment of the transverse wires. Fig. 3 shows the transverse wires continued through the loops of the yokes.
It is the object of my invention to provide a flexible elastic support for the bedding or superstructure of couches, beds, sofas, and the like, in which I provide for a longitudinal elasticity of the structure and a transverse bracing of the parts to prevent the sides of the elastic structure from being unduly drawn inward when the weight is upon it and to prevent the independent parts composing the structure from getting out of alinement.
As shown in the drawings, my device is composed of a series of yokes A, with transverse uniting and bracing bars 2. The yokes and the bracing-bars may either be made integral or portions of them in sepa rate parts.
As shown in Fig. 1, the yokes A are bent so as to form an approximately straight bar A at the bight. Thence the sides converge toward each other and are bent into loops, as at A which engage with the parts A of the next succeeding yoke. The bend A being hooked through the outer angles of the bights A, they are then curved around, forming other loops A and thence the wires extend transversely, as shown at 2. The ends of these transversely-extending wires are then either hooked over straight bars 4, which are interposed between each series of yokes A, or they may be engaged with the outer curvature of the bends A of the adj acent yokes upon each side, in which case said adjacent yokes will not be continued to form the transverse extensions 2that is, each intermediate yoke will be formed with i the curves A and A as previously described,
and the contiguous yokes upon each side will terminate with the curves or hooks A into which the ends of the transverse bars 2 of the intermediate yokes will be hooked, so as to unite the whole in a single flexible structure. These yokes are readily slipped over each other and interlocked, as described, until the required length has been attained. At the ends the yokes are connected with elastic spiral springs 5, which are fixed to or connected with the end bars 6 of the bed or couch, the whole forming the length of the bed. Each set of these yokes, with their springs, being thus connected with the ends of the couch'and transversely united by the bars 2, which are also connected with the outer edges of the structure, it will be seen that the transverse bars have sufficient rigidity to resist the inward thrust, which would tend to draw the edges of the structure inwardly, and the loops insure the relative position of the longitudinal portion of the structure, thus preventing displacement of any of the parts. In some cases it may be found desirable to make the transverse portions 2 continuous, extending through the hooks or loops A of the yokes, in which case these bars are connected with the outer sides of the structure and act in the same manner to resist the inward thrust of the parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bed or couch bottom consisting of yokes having longitudinal sides, shortapproximately straight transverse bights bent to connect with the sides, the open opposite ends of said yokes being bent into loops or curves which engage with the bights of a yoke longitudinally in line with the first-named yokes, and said loops or curves of the firstnamed yokes being extended transversely and provided with terminals which connect with a yoke of another and parallel series.
2. A bed-bottom consisting of yokes bent to form short transverse sections at the bight having hooks or loops formed at the opposite end to interlock with the bights of succeeding yokes, spiral springs having one end connected with the end frame of the bed-bottom, and the other end connected with the terminals of the yokes, said lines of yokes and springs being disposed in parallel series from one side to the other of the structure, and
the hooks or loops of the first-named yokesbeing extended transversely and connected,
to a yoke of the adjacent parallel series.
' 3. A bed-bott0m comprising a series of parallel interlocked yokes and spiral springs with which the terminal ends are connected, said yokes having their open ends bent to form supplemental curves, and straight trans verse extensions with hooks upon the outer ends by which the parallel series may be united into a continuous flexible structure.
4. A bed-bottom consisting of longitudinally-disposed yokes having the bights form ing short transverse bars, the opposite open ends bent into curves which interlock with the bights of the succeeding yokes, and transverse extensions from said curves integral therewith and having hooks upon the outer ends, straight bars or yokes intermediate thereof with which the hook ends of the transverse bars engage, spiral springs connected with the end frames of the bed-bottom and with the inner ends of which springs the bars and yokes are connected.
5. In a bedbottom, a series of yokes having the bights composed of short transverse bars, said yokes being bent to converge toward the open end, and having said open ends bent into loops to engage the bights of succeeding yokes, other bends formed exterior to said loops, and straight extensions from said bends extending transversely and engaging with contiguous yokes or interposed straight bars, said transverse extensions having hooks to engage the exterior sides of the structure, and acting to resist the inward thrust of said sides.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN HOEY.
