Be it known that l', AARON HILL, a eitizen of the United States, residing in Los Angeles county, near Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVire Mattresses, of which the following is a Specitication.

This invention relates to wire mattresses for beds and the like; and itI has for'its ob ject to provide improvements in such mattresses which will render the same superior with respect to maintenance of conformation, strength, durability, positiveness of action, comfort to the user and efficientl eoaction with the stuffed mattreSs ordinarily employed in Connection therewith; and which in'iprovenientsI will be generally superior in efficiency and servieeability.

The invention consists in the novel and useful provision, formation, Construction, as soeiation and relative arrangement of parts, membersl and features, all as hereinafter described, shown in the drawing and finally pointed out in claims.

F designates the. wire mattress of the i'i'iattress frame member` the same being: oonneeted with and supported upon the side rails., c. as at 3, at the ends ofthe wire mattreee, in any :suitable manner, the wire mattress being shown provided with transverse end bars or rails 4 having upstandinplr end pieces 5, each suoli bar or rail 4 with its end pieces 5 being ,-onnerted by (foil springs o with a supplemental transverse bar or rail 7 and the upstanding pieces Fl thereof. The Woven Wire mattres body Sl extends between the bars or rails 7, and a truss e is applied to the ivire mattress body at each @ide edge of the same, extending between the upright end pieces 8 and Connected at one or more points with the body 9 intermediate of such end pieces. Preferably, said 'truss e comprises a suspension member 10 of wire, cable, rope or built-up formation, which, as shown in the drawing, may consist of a longitudinal wire strand core l()a around which is formed a closely Wound helix 10b of Wire. Such construction, is, however, optional, and may be varied according to the nature and demands of service.

The suspension member 10 is normally downwardly looped from its end portions which are connected with the upper ends of the end pieces 8, to itsl central portion where it is tangent to the ventral portion of the side edge portion of the woven 'Wire mattress body 9, where the suspension member and auch mattress body edge portion are bound together, as by tie-wires or a suitable wire, as the ease may be, as at ll. Between the suspension member l0, and between the tiewvires 1l and the end pieces S, at intervals, extend suspenders 12 connected at. their upper ends` with the suspension member l() and at their lower ends with the edge portions of theA mattress body 9, which may be reinforced by a longitudinal strand 13 of twisted nire cable, or any suitable substitute. These suspenders may be vertically arranged, or in part. vertically and in part slant-wise, to tomplete a stress-resisting strong*lf formation of the truss e. The provision of suoli truss a materially strengthens the wire mattress atthe side edge portions, preventingthe same from distortion and del'iression, and maintainingr a true fiat formation, or approximately flat forn'iation at the edges of the wire mattress, any strain iinposed upon slu'h edge portions of the mattress being taken up by the suspendors 12 and suspension member 1G of the truss e and the tie-wires l1, the strain being finally imposed through the suspension member 10 upon the, transverse 'bar or rail 'i' and the end pieces S thereof` and thence through the coil spring 6 upon the transverse bar or rail 4 and end pieces 5 thereof to the side rails c of the bed frame which is of course rigid and non-yieldingltis Well known that the ordinary wire mattress has the tendeney to ,give and sag at the side edges, causing 'resultant breakdown in those portions of the mattress. Also, surh give at the side edges tends to render the mattress uncomfortable to use. The truss holds up the side edges, so that the depression resultant upon the weight of the occupant of the bed occurs between the side edges, as is proper, causing a comfortable t of the mattress .to the body of the occupant. The employment of this truss results in increased durability, strength, and length of life of the mattress, and also serves to hold the stufed mattress H'in proper position against lateral displacement upon the wire mattress.

The use of the truss prevents the sagging of the mattress at the edge so as to pinch o-r bind the bedding or the person sitting or resting upon the edge'of the bed, or the hands of the person making up or attending to the bed, between the side rail and the Wire or stutl'ed mattress or both.

I am aware of the fact that means have been provided at the sides of Wire mattresses for preventing slipping of the stuffed mattress, as above referred to; but I am not aware of the provision of any strengthening and reinforcing means, such as the truss e,

1. A wire mattress provided at its side"r` edge with a suspension member above the wire mattress and connected intermediate of its ends with the Wire mattre'ss and tangent thereto, and means with which the ends of 'the suspension member are connected in elevation above the wire mattress.

2. A Wire mattress provided at its side edge with a suspension member above the wire mattress and Connected intermediate of its ends with the Wire mattress and tangent thereto, and means with which the ends of the suspension member are oonneeted in elevation above the mattress; there being Suspenders between the suspension member and the edge of the wire mattress.
