J. P. BAUMGARTNER.
PLACKET CLOSER. APPLICATION FILED ooT.a,19o4.

JOSEPH P. BAUMGARTNER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO 1WILLIAM I. FORBES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYL- VANIA.
PLACKET-CLOSER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1905.
To f1.2] whom it' v1.0.7/ concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. BAUMGART- Nun, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Placket-Oloser, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in a placket-closer embodying a clip, a liexible support therefor, and guides on the placket with which said clip slidingly engages, said clip being adapted to be seated partly within said support and uniformly sustained on its opposite sides, so as to avoid twisting of the guides and binding of the clip thereon and admitting; of securing the clip in position without the necessity of perforating the same for the purpose of riveting' or stitching.
lt further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents in elevation a portion of a skirt, showing' a closure for the placket in closed position. Fig. 2 represents the parts in elevation in a different position from that shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a view in elevation of a portion of the closure in detached position. Fig. 4L represents a sectional view on line a', Eig'. l. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of a portion of the device.
Similar numerals of reference indicate co1'- responding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a portion of a skirt or other garment which is provided with a placket 2. Secured to each side of said placket are g'uides 3, which may be of any desired form, and in the present instance are formed of a fabric having the `fiattened portion 4 and the rib 5 thereon. It will be noted that the said guides are secuped to each side of the placket or other place which it is desired to close with the ribbed portions adjacent.
6 designates clips which are suitably mounted in any convenient manner upon a flexible support T, which in the present instance consists of a string or cord and which is adapted to be secured adjacent the lower portion of the placket-opening', said clips being carried by said support at suitable distances apart. The said clips consist of the jaws 8 and an intermediate cross-bar or neck 9, which joins said jaws, the latter being adapted to freely embrace said ribs, whereby the said eyes are prevented from lateral displacement, but can move longitudinally on said ribs as guides, said support having' opening's therein at intervals to receive the necks 9 of the clips, the walls of said openings encircling' said necks, whereby the clips are secured to the flexible support and carried by the same without requiring to be sewed or otherwise fastened to said support, while also avoiding' perforations in the clips. Again, the jaws are uniform, or comparatively uniform, or matched on both sides of the clips, so that either side may be placed in front or rear, and a jaw may be readily passed throug'h the opening in the flexible support, so as to seat the neck of the clip on said opening'. Furthermore, the necks of the clips being inserted in the openings, as above stated, are uniformly sustained on their opposite sides, whereby the clips are held uniformly in position and prevented from irregularly engaging' with the guides, thus obviating bending' of the clips on the guides and twisting' of the latter, and thus the clips are adapted to slide true on said guides.
In the drawings, l0 designates the waistband of the skirt, which is provided with any suitable fastening' devices, such as the hooks and eyes 12.
In Eig. l the placket is shown as in closed position with the clips engag'ing with the guides and holding' the edges of the placket together. \Vlien it is desired to remove the skirt or other garment, the wearer grasps the uppermost of the clips and by pressing or pulling down all of the clips are lowered on the ribs, said clips carrying with them the fiexible support 7, the position which the parts assume being best understood from Fig'. 2.
By unhooking' the waistband the placket will be open, as is evident, and the skirt free to be removed. To close the parts, the reverse operation is carried out. The skirt is placed in position on the wearer with the waistband hooked up, after which the clips are raised on the ribs by pulling` on the support 7, thus placing the clips in proper position with respect to the placket, as seen in Fig. 1, holding the same closed, and remaining' in position until pulled down to again open the placket for removal of the skirt.
It will be evident from the above that in this manner the garment may be quickly and easily put on and removed with the placket in position with the adjacent edges held in close contact, the operation being quickly and eas- IOO ily accomplished and without danger of creasing or disarranging the garment or the material of which it is composed.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having-thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a placket -closure of the character stated, a clip formed of jaws and an intermediate neck and a piece of Hexible material within which said neck vis contained and supported on its opposite sides.
2. In a placket-closer, guides adapted to be secured to the walls of the placket, a piece of tleXible material adapted to'be connected at one end with an adjacent portion ofthe placket, clips each formed of jaws and a neck centrally joining the same, said jaws slidingly engaging said guides and said piece having openings therein at intervals, the walls of each of said openings encircling the neck therein and securing the clip to said piece.
3. In a placket-closure, guides on the sides of the placket, a piece of flexible material secured at one end adjacent said placket, and a clip having jaws and intermediate necks, said jaws slidingly embracing said guides, said clip having its neck seated within said piece and embraced on opposite sides by the material thereof.
