Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1908.
Applicationled January 2.8, 1908. Serial No. 413,009.
. suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures ofreference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates `to new and useful improvements in placket closers and oomprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of arts which will be hereinafter fully describe Y and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention. Fig.V 2 is an enlarged detail view of one of the plates which is supported by a belt. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing studs which are fastened to one edge of the placket. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the placket and means which fasten the edges thereof together. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of a slotted plate adapted to 'receive a stud. Fig. 7 is a view showing a modified form of the placket closer. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view showing the stud fastened to one edge of the placket. Fig. 9 is a sectional view showing the manner in which the placket edges are held together. Fig. l() is a sectional view online 10%10 of Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a detail view of one of the eyelets adapted to be fastened without rivets, and Fig. 12 is a modified form of eyelet.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a belt which may either be detached from or fas-' tened to a waist B, and C is a skirt having upon one ofthe edges of the placket a strip D, preferably of metal, which is fastened by tape or any other suitable means thereto. Said strip is provided with headed studs or lugs D projecting from the outer face there, of, and E designatesa similar stud or lug prop j ecting from the top of the stri and in an opposite direction toward the be t.
F is a plate, preferably of metal, having upon its opposite edges two recesses G which are oval sha ed and having a contracted oplening G" eading therein and through w ich the belt is adapted to be passed. Upon reference to Fig. l of the drawings, it
`will be noted that where the belt is stitched to the waist an opening is left at the back of sufficient length to' allow the plate to be slipped through said opening, in order that the belt may engage said recesses, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thus making the device easily applied to or removed from the belt. Said plate F is provided with the stud receiving slot K, having va lateral extension K the end of which is enlarged, as at K2, for
Vthe reception of the head of the stud E which,
after being inserted through the opening K2, said plate is moved laterally so that the shank of the stud E will engage the vertical slot K and securely hold the skirt to the plate. Y
Mounted upon the skirt adjacent to one of the edges of the skirt is a series of stud receiving lates Q, an enlarged detail view of one of w ich is shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and in this view it will be noted that the .plate Q has an offsetportion Q provided with an elongated slot R, one end of which is enlarged and adapted to receive the head D of a stud D. Said plate Q is shown as being held by means of rivets to a tape N and metallic stripS and, by the provision of the'oifset therein,`it`will be noted that the head D will be held from frictional or rubbing contact with the tape or fabric and thereby prevent unnecessary wear upon the same. Without the plate having the offset, considerable wear will come upon the tape or fabric, but which willbe avoided by the construction set forth.
It will be understood'that in makin the lacket closers on princess skirts it wil not e necessary to have a stud put on the under side of the placket closer, this being necessary only when they are to be used in combination as a shirt-waist holder and skirt supporter. By the provision of the apparatus as shown and described, a material sup orter for the bottom of the placket of the s {irt is afforded by the tape extending the entire length ofthe placket and doubled upon itself at the lower end of the closure. If desired,
the placket closer may be used independent of the shirt-waist holder and vice versa.
In Fig. 7 of the drawings, I have shown a modification of the invention, in which the studs are mounted upon a strip of steel and a series of eyelets having springs about the marginal ledges of the openings therein whereby'the stud may be held in place and in said figure the strip is designated by letter T having the studs T thereon, and T2 designates the eyelets, detail view of which is shown in Fig. 12, provided with a spring T3 which is bent to form a resilient loop T4 about the marginal edges of the opening in the plate, said wire being bent about a lug T5 rejecting from one end of the plate. By t '1e provision of this spring which holds the studs, the placket is prevented from gaping between said studs and, by the use of a single strip of steel, the closer will be more flexible than otherwise. Metallic plates V are placed underneath the eyelet and designed to prevent unnecessary wear upon the skirt by the rubbing action of the stud.
In Fig. 11, I have shown a slight modification of the eyelet, in which integral spurs X are formed upon the eyelet for the purpose of affording means for attaching the same to the placket edge without the use of rivets or other fastening means.
By the provision of the a paratus as shown and described, it will be observed that a simple and efficient laoket closing apparatus is provided whicii may be readily applied to a skirt and, by the provision of the plate detachably held to the belt of a waist, a simple means is afforded for supporting the skirt, the plate being readily removed from the belt when desired.
The placket strip D may be made'in one whole strip or in sections, each containing a stud D.
What I claim to be new is 2- 1. A placket closer and skirt supporter, comprising, in combination with a skirt, a
belt, a plate having a slot with a right angled lateral extension therein, the opposite edges of said plate being recessed with centrar-,ted openings therein to receive said belt, headed studs iiXed to the meeting edges of the placket, plates having slots therein to receive the headed studs upon the opposite meeting edge of the placket, said plates having oil'- sets, and a stud adapted to engage the slot of said belt engaging plate, as set forth.
2. In combination with a waist and skirt, a belt, a plate detachably supported by said belt and provided with a slot, a series of headed studs upon the edge of the placket, plates fastened to the opposite edge of the skirt and provided with an inwardly projecting offset having an elongated slot therein for the reception of a headed stud, a headed stud projecting from the inner edge of one of the edges of the placket and adapted to engage a slot in said belt supported plate, as set forth.
3. In combination with a waist and skirt, a belt, a plate detaehably supported by the belt and provided with a slot, means upon the skirt for engagement with said slot a series of headed studs upon the edge of the placket, eyelets secured to the opposite edge of the placket, springs secured to said eye lets and adapted to retain the studs in place, as set forth.
4, In combination with a waist and skirt, a belt, a plate detachably supported by the belt and provided with a slot, means upon the skirt for engagement with said slet a series of headed studs upon the edge el' the placket, eyelets secured to the opposite edge of the placket, springs secured to said eyelets and adapted to retain the studs in place.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
