Description

No. 767,812. PATENTBD AUG. 16, 1904.
G. HAEFLIGER. FASTENING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 24, 1903. N0 MODEL.
F K I IHIHII v NIH IIIIHMINIMUM/"Min WITNESSES.-
I ATTORNEY UNITED STATES Patented August 16, 1904.
OECILE HAEFLIGER, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,812, dated August 16, 1904.
Application filed August 24, 1903. Serial No. 170,641. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OEoILn HAEFLIGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fastening means for retaining a-sheet of material upon an ironing-board or the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a pair of flexible parallel rods assembled so as to retain a sheet of material snugly upon an object and also to provide means carried by said rods whereby the cloth may be retained upon the object and in a comparatively rigid position.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for retaining a sheet of material upon an object and to adjustably mount said means so as to enable the cloth or sheet of material to conform to the shape of said object.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of an ironing board provided with a sheet of material covering the same and retained by means of my invention in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of my device. Fig. 3 is afragmentary perspective view of a portion of my device.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
In the drawings reference-numeral 1 designates a sheet of material which is'spread over an ironing-board 2, so that it is smooth on the ironing-surface and laps over on the back, as seen in Fig. 2. My fastening device is then applied in a manner which will be understood from the following description.
In the construction of the improved fastening means I'employ a pair of parallel rods or bars 8, which are bifurcated (see Fig. 3) at each end, said bifurcation forming extended hooks 9, which are adapted to engage the cloth at the ends of the board, as is shown in Fig. 3. As shown in the drawings, the rods 8 are provided with loops 10, which are formed by twisting said rods, as is shown in Fig. 3. The said bars 8 are preferably formed from flexible material, so as to give elasticity to the same, and thereby facilitate the operation of the entire device. Secured to the loops 10 or rings are hooks. These loops and hooks are preferably arranged in antipodal position. In the drawings I have preferably shown a hook 11, which is detachably secured to the loops 10. These hooks comprise a single piece of material bent at their ends in opposite directions, and at the central portion a loop 12 is formed for retaining the said hooks upon the loop 10. It will be seen that by inserting the curved end formed upon one of the angular members of said hook 11 into the loop 10 and passing said member therethrough until the members of the hook are spread apart the loop formed upon said rod 8 will enter the looped portion 12 of the hook 11, thereby positively retaining said hook 11 upon the bar or rod 8. The books formed upon the bifurcated ends engage the ends of the material, as shown in Fig. 2, and the hooks 11 upon the parallel bars engage the ends of the material extending parallel upon the board. It will be seen that if the cloth covering the board is not of suflicient width to entirely encircle the same, the adjustability of the rods, which is produced by assembling helical springs 13 with said bars, the same may be extended to conform to the width of the sheet of material on the board. It will be immaterial as to whether or not the hooks are attached to the material near the edge of the board or to the edges of the material near the center of the bottom of the board when the said sheet is placed upon the ironing-board or on any suitable object, as the flexibility of the springs 13 will take up all shrinkage or extension of the parallel members.
It will be seen that the invention may be employed upon other objects than ironingboards-as, for instance, upon embroider-ingframes orcurtain-frames or like structures and will accomplish the same function as is obtained in assembling the fastening members with a sheet of material upon an ironingboard.
Although I have described the preferred form of my invention in the accompanying specification and have illustrated the same in the drawings, I reserve the right to make such modifications and alterations as shall fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastening device comprising a plurality of longitudinal bars, or rods, goods-engaging hooks on said bars, means on the bars adapted to prevent longitudinal shifting of said hooks thereon, and means for drawing said bars toward each other.
2. A fastening device comprising a plurality of longitudinal bars, or rods, goods-engaging hooks on said bars, means on the bars integral therewith adapted to prevent longitudinal shifting of said hooks thereon, and means for drawing said bars toward each other.
A fastening device comprising longitudinal rods or bars, goods-engaging hooks at the ends thereof, the said rods or bars being provided with eyes at suitable intervals, and laterally-projecting hooks secured to said eyes.
f. A fastening device comprising a plurality of longitudinal bars, or rods, goods-engaginghooks on said bars, hook-engaging means on the bars comprising a plurality of oppositely-disposed members formed from the material of said bars and adapted to prevent longitudinal shifting of said hooks thereon, and means for drawing said bars toward each other.
5. A fastener comprising longitudinal parallel rods, goods-engaging hooks carried thereby, and springs connecting the said parallel rods, said springs tending to draw the rods toward each other.
6. A fastener comprising longitudinallyextending bars, laterally-extending double hooks for engaging material to be fastened, and means connecting the bars.
7. A fastener comprising bars with end hooks, lateral hooks secured thereto, and yielding connecting means interposed between the bars.
'8. A fastening device comprising rods, a series of hooks carried thereby, links connecting the said rods, and springs interposed in the length of each of said links for drawing the rods toward each other.
9. A fastener comprising rods formed with a plurality of hooks at their ends, a plurality of laterally-extending hooks at intermediate points upon said rods, and springs for connecting the rods and drawing them toward each other.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CEOILE HAEFLIGER.
