SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 541,872, dated July 2, 1895.

its object is to provide as an article of manufacture a bottom piece which may be attached to any suitable frame work for the purpose of producing a springy cot, hammock or bed bottom.

The invention also consists in other details which will be clearlybrought out hereinafter.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l represents a top plan view of my bottom detached. Fig. 2 is a section along one edge thereof, showing the cord secured therein.
Like reference numerals indicate like in the two views.
l represents a sheet of canvas or other fabric, of which the bottom proper is to be made up, having sewed in its outer edges a cord 2 to which is attached along the ends and sides parts a series of loops or rings 3 having connected to them coiled springs 4 and hooks 5. The coiled springs 4 are formed at their outer ends with a loop or hook 6 by means of which the same may be attached to any frame work for the purpose of producing a cot or hammock.
In using my device as a cot the springs 4 atthe ends and sides of the bottom l will be attached to suitable parts of the frame work of the cot and a resilient bottom will be provided therefor. If it is not desired to have so much spring the hooks 5 may be attached in place of the springs 4, or bothmay be secured to lthe, frame Work for the purpose of producing a springy bottom and at the same time preventing undue sagging thereof.. I may, if I desire, connect the outer ends of the springs 4 or the hooks 5, or both, by a suitable cord 7, which may itself be attached to hooks upon any frame work.
Of course, if the device is to be used as a hammock the end pieces alone will be attached to a supporting cord or rope.
The invention is very simple in construction, but by it a useful and convenient bottom is produced at a small cost.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, the herein described bottom for cots, hammocks and the like, consisting of a sheet of canvas or other suitable fabric cut to the proper shape and dimensions, binding cords secured to the outer edges of said canvas, and extending entirely around the outside thereof metallic loops fasi tened to said cords at intervals, springs and.
hooks secured to saidloops, and a cord passing through the outer ends of said springs and hooks, substantially as and for the purpose described.'
