SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,028, dated July 5, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN M. ALFoRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Display-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in display-cases for cans containing crackers, cakes, &c. Its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device formed of sections any number of which are adapted to be quickly connected and which provides an inexpensive and attractive holder for cans especially adapted foruse in stores.

The invention consists in forming a case of a desired number of sections, each of which is preferably constructed of L-shaped cornerstrips having intermediate connecting-strips whereby a rectangular case is produced. The connecting-strips have apertures therein for the reception of bolts, whereby two or more sections may be fastened together to form a complete case.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a casesection and showing in dotted lines a can in position therein. Fig. 2 is a section through the case formed of sections bolted together. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of case-section, and Fig. 4 is an elevation thereof and showing smaller case-sections secured thereto.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, l l are L-shaped corner-strips, each of which has grooves 2 in the center portions of its edges, and these grooves are adapted to receive tongues 3, projecting from the ends ofconnecting-strips 4C. The frame produced by the corner and connecting strips may be of any desired size and forms a case for a can 6, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) and which is adapted to be slid into or from the case, as desired. The apertures 5 are countersunk, as shown at 7, to receive the heads of bolts 8, whereby two or more sections may be securely fastened together, as shown in Fig. 2.

If desired, each of the case-sections may be constructed with a multiplicity of openings, as shown in Fig. 3, in which the case-section is shown with four can-receiving portions. This modified section is constructed of a central X-shaped strip 9 and L-shaped cornerstrips 10. Interposed between the cornerstrips are T-shaped strips 11, the tongues 12 of which are in alinement with the edges of the central strip 9. Connecting-strips 13 are arranged between the L-shaped and T-shaped strips and 11 and are provided with apertures 14, similar to the apertures 5, hereinbeforereferred to. Connecting-strips are also interposed between the tongues 12 and the edges of the central strip 9 and serve to securely connect all of the strips of the case and to form a solid article. As shown in Fig.

4, one or more of the case-sections, such as shown in Fig; 1, may be fastened to the section illustrated in Fig. 3, such connection being made by means of bolts 8, arranged within the apertures 5 and 14. It will also be understood, of course, that two or more of the modified case-sections may be fastened together. When several sections, such as herein described, are secured together, an at tractive case is formed in which cans can be readily inserted and securely held. The case is verysimple and inexpensive in construction and can be readily set up.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I amaware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A case of the character described comprising L-shaped corner-strips, and apertured connecting strips interposed between the edges thereof.

2. A case of the character described comprising L-shaped corner-strips having grooves in the edges thereof, connecting-strips intermediate the corner-strips and having apertures therein, and tongues to the connectingstrips adapted to be seated and secured within the grooves.
