PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL WEBER, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EMIL F. WEBER, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS! I HOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 750,418, dated January 26, 1904.
Application filed May 28, 1903. Serial No. 159,152. No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hoes especially adapted for use in cleaning ash-pits of furnaces, &c. and its object is to provide a hoe which is struck up from a single piece of sheet metal and which is provided with integral reinforcing-flanges whereby the same will be prevented from buckling or twisting after being bent into desired shape.
The invention consists in providing a hoe blade from the upper edge of which extends a web. This web is at right angles to the 7 blade and together therewith has flanges along the edges thereof to prevent buckling or twisting. A rib is pressed centrally of the web and the blade and is so shaped as to hold said web and blade at all times at the proper angle to each other.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hoe, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section therethrough.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a preferably rectangular blade having integral flanges 2 extending at right angles from the sides thereof, and formed integral with the upper edge of the blade is a web 3, the side edges of which arepreferably curved and provided.with downwardly-extending integral flanges 4. A rib 5 is pressed outward from the web 3 and the blade 1, respectively, and extends over the line of conjunction and, as is obvious, serves to prevent the blade from being bent out of its proper position in relation to the web. The flanges 2 and 4 prevent buckling of the blade and web, and the flanges of the web also serve to overlap the end of a metal handle 6, which may be welded thereto'and thereby form the hoe and handle in practically one piece of metal.
The hoe is very simple and inexpensive in construction, is durable, and, as hereinbefore stated, is especially adapted for cleaning ashpits of furnaces, &c.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. Ahoe consisting of a single sheet of metal and comprising a blade, integral flanges at the sides thereof, a web integral with the upper edge of the hoe, flanges at the sides of the Web, and a rib upon the web and blade and across the line of conjunction therebetween.
2. A hoe comprising a blade, integral flanges at the side edges thereof, a web'integral with the upper edge of the hoe and extending laterally therefrom, flanges integral with the edges of the web, a rib upon the'blade and web and extending over the line of conjunction there between, and a handle extending from the web and between the flanges thereof.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMIL WEBER.
