TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WALTER SHEPPERMAN, of'Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Penn sylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovement's in Screw-Clamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description'thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of my screw-clamp, with one side of the head removed,
Figure 2, a view of one of the pulleys; and
Figure 3 is a view illustrative of the operation of the clamp.
The nature of this invention consists in the employment of a cross-head, provided with friction-rollers, arranged in combination with cord, screw, and block, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled'in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation. I p
A represents the cross-head, formed as seen in fig. 1. Through the cross-head A is inserted the screwb, which penetrates half an inch, more or less, in the main screw 0, and thus works on a thread cut to receive it. The neck of screw b is made smooth, so that it will turn easily in cross-headA. The cross-head A is furnished with the two friction-rollers e, the object of whic'h will be hereinafter explained. D designates a screw-block, which may be made of any suitable shape. The block D is screwed on before the cross-head is secured in position. Near one end of screw-block Dis inserted the pin S, in a position parallel with main screw 0. The same block I) has two perforations, also parallel with said main screw 0. 9 represents a cord, which passes over the top of cross-head A and the two rollers 2; Each 'end of said cordiis then passed through its respective perforationsin screw-hlock D, and the pendent ends left sufiiciently long to answerthe purpose to which the clamp is to be applied. The main screw 0 will be furnished with a handle, that will admit of being firmly grasped. I I I The operation of my invention is illustrated by figl3, in which a series of felloes are to he clampedtogeth'er. The said felloes are arranged on the former, in the position represented in the drawing. The cord y will then he passed around them, with the cross-head A as near to them as the cord will allow it to come, one end of the cord having been 'knotted, as represented in fig. 1, and the other end 'secured 'to the pin 01. The ends of the cord being thnssecur'ed, screw 0 is then turned, untilthe tension of the cord 9 is sufiiciently great to closetho joints between .the parts tlin'e clamped, I V I Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure hyLetters Patent; is-
The cross-head A, provided with rollers e e, in combination with screw G, block D, and cord g,sub s,tanti ally in the manner herein set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER SHEPPERMAN.
