Description

@with tant atmt @Him ALMORE HASKELL, OF HARRISON, MAINE. Letters Patent 1Y0. 68,438, lated September 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWIPTS.
@te rlgrmil rrfnreh 1n it tlgfst iettrrs ntcut mit milking mi nf tige amm?.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, ALMORE' HASKELL, of Harrison, in the county of Cumberland, and State of Maine, have invented new and useful improved Swifts; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which are illustrated my improved swifts and their mode of operation.
The object of my invention is to produce swifts which can be quickly attached to and taken from a chairtop, table, tite., or asewing machine, for the purpose of Winding thread, yarn, &c.
I am aware that a variety of these articles are the subjects of Letters Patent, and claim mine as a diierent combination of devices for effecting the same purpose.
a b show `two circular reels, revolving on their sha'fts c d, and composed of' the disks e fg z., and the wires 1 2 4 5 6. The wires 1 2 3 4 5 6 form the part of the reels over -which passes the thread or yarn. These reels a b are placed, one, a, on the slide z', the other, b, on the arm or slide j. These two arms or slides are flat in the parts of their surface that come in contact. The slide has on its end the link or eye c, which passes around and slides on the arm j. It also has a clamp and thumb-screw, m v. The rm j has the open link or eye n, thus open so that as the swifts are`extended the shaft c of the reel a may pass through the seme. The arm z'has the ring or clamp oto keep the two slides together when the swifts are extended, and to secure an even and regular motion. p is a clamp, to fasten the whole to any desired object by means of the thumbscrew 1'.
The .swifts may be closed-as seen iu the drawing, or extended as indicated by the dotted lines. At any point the two slides can be prevented from sliding upon each other further by the clamp and screw m v. The eye k holds the slide 'z' on the slide j. By turning out the screw v the two slides may be moved upon each other.
I do not claim broadly extensible swifts, nor any ot' the different parts of the swifts by themselves; but what I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The swifts as herein described, combining the various devices set forth, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
ALMORE HASKELL.
