TUBAcH,'a citizen of the United States, residing at ADushcrc, in the countyof Sullivan and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in B edstead-Couplings; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in couplings for c .nnecting the side rails to the corner-posts of bedsteads.

The object vof the invention is to provide a bedstead-coupling which shall be simple of con struction, eicient in use, and inexpensive of production, which is designed to hold the parts iirmly connected, which prevents undue lateral movement of the side rails, and Y which is reversible for application to cornerposts at eitherside ofthebedstead.

lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will beA hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,.in which- Figure 1 is an outer side elevation showing the application of the coupling to a corner-post and side rail of a bedstead, a portion ofthe post and rail only appearing. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Referring now more particularly to `the drawings, 1 denotes the corner-post of the head or foot of a bedstead, and 2 one of the side rails of the bedstead, which, as shown, are of the typev employed in. metallic bedsteads, the side rails being of angle form; but these parts may be made of any 'material to suit the purpose, the invention in this respect not being limited in application to any particular type of bedstead.

In the embodiment of my invention the hook member of the coupling is composed of a piece of sheet metal bent or struck up to provide a nearlycircular body portion or socket 3, having its ends projecting in parallelrelation to form spaced hook-plates 4, each of which is provided with a desired number of openings 5. The hook members 6 of each plate are formed by slotting or notohing said plate, as shown at 7, and it will be observed that these notches extend. at' an angle for a purpose hereinafter described. The other member 8 of the coupling consists of a plate provided with a shank 9, adapted to be riveted or otherwise connected to the rail 2. The said plate is provided with oppositely-pro jecting studs 10 for engagement with the hooks 6 of the coupling-hooks. The outer edge of the plate 8 is slightly concave, as shown at 11. l

Coacting with the coupling-hooks is an YL.shap ed bracket 12, the arms 13 and L1 of whichrare provided with rivet-openings 15, and projecting from opposite'sides of this bracket at an angle thereto are locking-studs 16. Either one of these studs'is adapted to enter. an opening 17, drilled or otherwise formed in the post 1, and the .upwardly-extending arm thereof is secured between the two hook-plates 4 by bolts, rivets, or other connections 18 passing through .the openings 5 and 15. The other or inwardly-projecting horizontal arm oi' the bracket is adapted to be secured to one of the portions of the head or foot piece, as will be readily understood,

and it will be seen that by the described for-v mation of the bracket and arrangement of the studs 16 the said bracket may be adjusted to entend in either direction, so 'as to be employed upon either side of the bedstead. It will also be observed that by the use of the two parallel hook-plates e the attaching-arm of the bracket is iirmly held in position and the coupling-plate S is supported bythe said plates 4 against lateral or sidewise movement, thus preventing the side rails 2 from having undue lateral vibration.

In order to further provide for a firm locking connection between the .two parts of the coupling, I iiare or bevel the opposite sides IOO bear against the exposed side 19 of the locking-arm of the bracket, thereby causing said arm to be wedged inward, so that the lockingstud 16 at its lower end will fit tightly within the opening 17, while the upper end of the arm will be forced into engagement with the post 1, thereby holding the bracket firmly in position. To facilitate this action, the openings 15 in each arm 13 and 14 may be made elongated, so as to allow the bracket to tilt to a slight extent for the stated purpose.

By the provision of the studs l0, projecting from the opposite sides of the coupling-plate S, this member of the coupling may be secured to either the inside or the outside of the rail 2, and it may also be so applied to the attaching-flange of the rail that the latter may be reversed, so that the other flange maybe upwardly exposed and extend inwardly to support the springs of the bedstead or be downwardly exposed and project inwardly to sup-i port the slats.

If desired, the body portion of the hook members (i may be provided with a tongue 21 to enter the recess 22 in the post 1 to more securely hold said hook member from shifting on the post.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of my invention will be readily understood, and it will be seen that it provides a coupling which is simple of construction, effective in use, prevents undue action of the parts, and which is reversible for application to cornerposts on either side of the bedstead and to permit the side rails to support the slats or springs.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a coupling of the character described, the combination with a fastening for connecting the corner-post and side rail of a bedstead, of an angle-bracket having arms for respective connection with said fastening and the head or foot piece of the bedstead, substantially as described.

2. In a coupling of the character described, the combination with a fastening for connecting the corner-post and side rail of abedstead,

of an angle-bracket having arms for connection with the fastening and the head or foot piece of the bedstead, said bracket being reversible for connecting either arm with the fastening, whereby the bracket may be interchangeably used on either side of the bedstead, substantially as described.

3. In a coupling of the character described, the combination with a fastening for connecting the corner-post and side rail of abedstead, of an angle-bracket having arms for respective connection with said fastening and the head or foot piece ofthe bedstead, and means for holding the fastening and bracket for endwise movement on the corner-post, substantially as described.

In a coupling of the character described, the combination with a fastening for connecting the corner-post and side rail of a bedstead, of an angle-bracket having arms for connection with the fastening and the head or foot piece of the bedstead, said bracket being provided at the angle with a stud to enter a socket in the post, substantially as described.

5. In a coupling ofthe character described, the combination of a coupling member provided with a socketto engage a corner-post and spaced jaws or hooked plates, an L-shaped bracket having one arm fitted between said plates and secured thereto and provided at the angle with studs to engage the post, and a second coupling member adapted to fit between said jaws or hooked plates and provided with studs to engage the hooks thereof, substantially as described.

6. ln a coupling of the character described, the combination with a fastening for connecting the corner-post and side rail of a bedstead, of an angle-bracket having arms for connection with the fastening and the head or foot piece of the bedstead, said bracket being provided at the angle with oppositely-projecting studs to engage the post, said studs being so arranged that the bracket is made reversible for connecting either arm with the post and fastening, whereby the bracket may be interchangeably used on either side of the bedstead, substantially as described.
