Description

PATENTBD DBG. 25, 1906. `v
GQ 4E. BIGBLOW I CORNER FASTENING-FOR SPRING MATTRESSBS.
.APPLICATION FILED 00T.2. 19.05.
`- UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEErGE.
GEORGE E. BIGELCW, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR MORGAN SPRING COMPANY, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A
CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
CORNER-FASTENl/NG FOR SPRING-MATTRESSENS.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed October 2, 1905. Serial No. 280,906.
Vlorcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement lin Corner-Fastenings for Spring-Mattresses, of which the following is a specification, laccompanied by drawings forming a part of the same, in whichi Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved corner-fastening. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the same.
Similar reference-figures refer to similar parts in the different views. My invention relatesl to a corner-fastening by which the end and side rails of a springbed are united, with the end rails supported with one end of a side rail and one `end of anl end rail of a bed-bottom connected by the corner-fastening. In the construction cf bed-bottoms it is customary to securely bolt l' both the side and end rails to the cornerfastenings; and it is the object of my present invention` to rovide a means for connecting the end and side rails of a bed-bottom so the bed-bottom may be kn'c cked down and set up without the employment of bolts and nuts, thereby reducing the number of parts in the bed-bottom and enabling the bed-bottoms` to be shipped in bundles in a knockdown state and readily assembled without the use of wrenches or other tools.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown one of my improved corner-fastenings, the remaining three emloyed in the constructionof a bed-bottom Eeing duplicates, 1 kdenotes a side rail of a bed-bottom, and 2 one of the end rails, said end and side rails beingformed of a strip of iron or steel angle-iron; Cast around one end of the side rail 1 and firmly attached thereto by the process of casting is a sleeve 3, upon which 1s mounted a rib 4, provided with a horizontal semicircular groove 5, which is slightly tapering, that end of the groove being the largest which is directly over' the end of the side rail 1.
From one side of the sleeve 3 an arm 6 projects, braced by a triangular web 7 between the arm 6 and the rib4. The laterally-projecting arm 6, is adapted to ,rest upon the bedstead, and thereby support the bed-bottcm. The end rail 2,` near its end is inclosed by a sleeve 8, which is cast upon the end rail,
and firmly attached thereto by the process of casting. Depending from the center of the sleeve 8 i's aweb 9, on the lower edge of which is a semicircular rib 10, slightly tapering and adapted to be drawn endwise into the semicircular groove or; socket 5.
Springs are attached to the end rail by holes 11 or otherwise, and the strain upon the end rails when the bed vis in use is in the direction of the arrows 12 12, Figs. 1 .and 3, which tends to draw the semicircular ribs 10 more firmly into the sockets 5, and as the ribs 10 and sockets 5 are slightly tapering the ribs become wedged in the sockets, forming a firm joint between the upper and lower members of the corner-fastenings.
What I claim as my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the side and end rails of a bed-bottom, of a corner-fastening uniting the ends of said side and end rails, and consisting of sleeves attached to the ends of said rails, with the sleeve upon the side rail provided with a tapering groove parallel with the side rail, and with the sleeve uponthe end rail provided with a tapering rib transverse to the end rail, with the outer ends of said grooves and said ribs the ssl largest, whereby a pullingstrain between the end rails will draw the ribs into said grooves.
2. In a bed-bottom, the combination of a side rail, a member attached to said side rail and having a rib projecting upwardly therefrom, provided with a tapering groove in its upper edge parallel with the side rail, an end rail, a member attached to said end rail and having a web depending therefrom provided with a tapering rib transverse to said end rail and iitting said groove.
3. In a bed-bottom, the combination with a side and end rail, ofV a connecting cornerfastening between the ends of said rails, con- IOO sisting of tWo members, one of said members with the side rail, WherebT a pulling strain ro being attached and projecting at right anbetween said end rails will draw the ribs gles from the. end of the side rail, and the firmly into said grooves.
