Description

TENER.
M. G. MERRIT ED AD CORNER FAS Patented Apr. 2'7, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORTIMER G. MERRITT, OF ROME, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE ROME METALLIC BEDSTEAD COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BEDSTEAD-CORN ER FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,485, dated April 27, 1897.
Application led December 8, 1896. Serial No. 614,925. (No model.)
To all whom, it 17m/y concern:
Be it known that I, MORTIMER G. MERRITT, of Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-OornerFasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciiication.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a corner of a bedstead having my improvements in rail-fastening device. Fig. 2 shows in perspective on alarger scale an end View of the side rail. Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of a portion of a bedstead-post in connection with the socketfastener on the post. Fig. tshows a vertical section of the socket-fastener in connection with a portion of the end of the side rail. Fig. 5 shows a plan view of the fastener and end of the side rail. Fig. 6 shows section on line A B of Fig. 4.
.Referring to the reference-figures in a more particular description of the device, 1 indicates the bedstead-post, which has secured thereon the socket-fastener 2. The fastener 2 is provided with a substantially square end,
as shown at 2a, and a dovetailed socket 3.
The side rail Il is provided with a fastener il, secured on the end ofthe rail and having a substantially square end 4b, adapted to abut on the square end of the piece 2, except for the double-headed or donble-cone-shaped projection 4l. vThe size and shape of the projection 4b are such as'to adapt it to enter the dovetailed socket 3 and to bind in the socket, as shown in Fig. 6, in such position as to support the rail in substantially the same horizontal plane with the post socket-piece 2. By making the dovetailed projection 4b doubleended or double-cone shaped, as shown, the rail et can be reversed, so as to bring it either side up and with the webs of the angle-rail in or out. It will be understood that the side rails 4 are provided with similar fasteners 4a on each end, and the reversing may be accomplished by changing the rail end for end or by simply turning it over as desired.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isM l. In a bed a post socket-piece having a socket and a rail having a double-cone-shaped projection adapted to engage in the socket, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a bed of a post socket-piece having a dovetailed socket and a reversible-angle side rail having a doubleended cone-shaped projection adapted to be received either side up in the' socket, substantially as set forth.
3. A rail having a headed projection tapered in opposite directions from its middle and a bedstead having sockets to receive the headed projection.
In witness whereof I have afiked m y signature in presence of two witnesses.
MORTIMER G. MERRITT.
