PATENT OEEICE.
OTTO BRS, OF COOLA, TRUNDLE, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,438, dated November 10, 1903.
Application filed January 2, 1903. Serial No. 137,598. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO BRS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Coola, Trundle, in the State of New South Wales and Commonwealthof Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheep-Shears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sheep-shears which are operated manually, and it has been devised with the view to constructing sheep-shears in which Vthe blades may be more readily detached than those hitherto in use for the purposes of sharpening or for substituting fresh blades and which shears will at the same time be maintained absolutely rigid for operating purposes.
I am aware that heretofore it has been proposed to provide detachable blades for sheepshears; but in such cases the blades have generally been provided with a shank which fitted in a groove in the corresponding shank of the bow, the two shanks being held together in various ways.
According to this invention the bow-Shanks are stamped or formed with extensions, (preferably about one-third the length and about one-half the width of the detachable blades,) and the blades are fastened to the said extensions by means of groove-and-tongue or dovetail joints and by one or more countersunk screws. i
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I will now refer to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved sheep-shears with the blades detached. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are transverse sections through the lines A A, B B, OC, and D D, respectively.
The same numerals refer to the same or corresponding partsin all the figures.
l 1 are the shanks of the bow, and'Z 2 extensions thereon,.while 3 3 are recessed grooves or slots on said extensions.
4 4. are the blades, partly cutaway at their screwed together they will in relation to each f other remain absolutely rigid.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
` A pair of sheep-shears comprising a bow provided with Shanks, inwardly-extending extensions carried by the upper end of said Shanks and each having a beveled inner edge, each of said extensions further provided with a dovetailed groove which in connection with the beveled edge forms a tongue, said extensions further provided with openings extending through the tongues thereof, a pair of blades having their broadest part provided with tongues and dovetailed grooves extending in a direction to the length thereof, said blades further provided with openings, said tongues of the blades adapted to engage in the grooves of the extensions, and said tongues of the extensions adapted to engage in the grooves of the blades, said openings of the extensions adapted to register with the openings of the blades when the tongues of the extensions engage in the grooves of the blades, and means extending through the openings of the blades and extensions for detachably connecting them together,I substantially as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses,
- OTTO BORS. Witnesses:
