To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ENGLAND J. BARKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morgan Park, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Holding and Centering the Rolls of Paper Contained in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates more particularly to autographic registers, although it could be used in conjunction with other machines or devices in which rolls of paper are used in substantially the same manner. Its object is to provide simple and easily-manipulated means for centering and holding the roll of paper, which permit the roll to be easily replaced or withdrawn when the case of the register is open, automatically locks said means when said case is closed, and provides sufficient friction against the ends of the roll central section of an autographic register having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section through a part of the stationary section of said register, taken on a plane intersecting the axes of the paperroll-centering devices. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing in perspective the locking devices used in said stationary section of the register for preventing the accidental displacement of the paper-rolls. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing in perspective the device for lockin g the means for centering the paper-roll journaled in the movable section. of the register case.
In the accompanying drawings the case of the autographicregister to which myim provements are applied comprises a suitable rectangular base-plate A, made of wood or other suitable material, and a frame consisting of a stationary section B and a movable section 0, hinged thereto at one end of the base-plate. The exact construction of these sections B and C or of theotherparts of the register is immaterial in so far as the subject-matter of Serial No. 100.240. (No model.)
closed the axes of these rolls are all in the same horizontal plane and are an equal-distance apart. The roll of paper adapted to' be used in conjunction with my improvements consists of a continuous web at, wound upon ahollow pasteboard core X. To center and journal these rolls, I secure circular heads D D D to the inner surface of the side walls of the case in the proper position in any suitable manner, which are of such diameter and thickness that the end of the core X of the roll can be readily slipped over and revolve upon the same. Immediately opposite in alinement with the center of plates D the other side wall of the case is provided with outwardly projecting hollow bosses a ct CL, and fitted into the bores of these bosses are spindles b, thatare provided with milled heads a on their outer ends and circular or other suitably-shaped plates (1 on their inner ends within the case. Secured concentric to the inner faces of plates d are centering-heads e, which when the core of the paper roll is journaled on the stationary heads D are adapted to enter and form a journal for the opposite end of the core. The spindles are kept normally pressing toward the opposite centering-heads D by means of coil expansion-springs f, surrounding their inner portions and having one end bearing against plates at and the other-endagainsta shoulder made byincreasing the diameter of the inner portion of the bore'of-bosses a. Spindles b are preferably not revoluble. Consequently when a roll of paper is journaled between the centering-head e carried thereby and the head on the opposite side of the case the pressure of plate cl against the end of the roll creates a friction sufficient to prevent said roll revolving of its own volition and unwinding the paper therefrom faster than is needed.
In order to prevent the movable centeringheads from accidentally withdrawing from the core of the roll, I have provided locking devices which are adapted to automatically operate when the hinged section of the case is closed down over the stationary section. In the stationary section these locking devices comprise a vertically-reciprocal boltE, which moves in the guide-lugs h h, projecting inward from the side of the case midway between the bosses at a, and has its upper end extend slightly above the upper edge of said side wall and bent laterally over the same, so that when the hinged section 0 is closed down upon the stationary section B it will depress said bolt. The lower end of bolt E extends down below the plane of the centers of heads e and preferably to about the plane of the lower segments of plates 61, where it passes between and loosely engages the shoulders of the cam-shaped extensions g g ofthe corresponding arms G G, pivoted to the side wallof the case in the same horizontal plane and preferably at points near and at an equal distance from the lower end of said bolt. These arms extend in opposite directions from the plane of bolt E and are so shaped and of such length that when the said bolt is at the limit of its upward movement said arms will fall below and be beyond the reach of plates 01, and when said bolt is depressed their end portions will be moved up between plates at and the side wall of the case, and their laterallybent extremities g g will prevent the said plates and spindles to which they are connected from receding from the paper-roll a sufficient distance to withdraw the centering-head e from the core of said roll.
The locking device for the centering devices for the paper-roll of the hinged section 0 works on the same principle as arms G and comprises simply a rocking bar H, which is fulcrumed to an extension of the side wall of section B near one end. This bar has one end terminating below plate cl and provided with an upward extension 7c, having a laterally inward projecting lug 7c near its extremity and is provided at its opposite end with an upwardly-projecting finger K, which has its extremity bent laterally outward over the upper edge of the said extension of side wall of section B, which passes under and is below the plane of the hinged section, 'so that when said hinged section is closed down over the stationary section its lower edge bears down upon and depresses finger K and rocks said bar I-I so that the extension 7c thereof passes up between plate (1 and theside of the case and with lug 7t limits the withdrawal movein out of the centering devices from the paperroll. The weight of the longer branch of bar H and of the longer branches of arms G will when the hinged section is raised from the stationary section cause them to automatically move down from behind plates (1, and this movement of arms G is depended upon to automaticallylift bolt E to the limit of its upward movement, although other means may be provided for this purpose, if desired.
What I claim as new is- 1. The combination with a suitable case having parallel side walls to the inner surface of one of which a stationary head is secured, aspring-actuated movable centering-head operatively connected to and projected from the opposite side of said case in alinement with said stationary head, having a limited movement transverse to the sides of the case and normally at the limit of its movement toward said stationary head, and movable means for locking said movable head in its projected position.
2. The combination with a suitable case having parallel side walls to the inner surface of one of which a stationary centeringhead is secured, a spring-actuated movable centering-head operatively connected to and projected from the opposite side of said case in alinement with said stationary head, having a limited movement transverse to the sides of the case and normally at the limit of its movement toward said stationary head, and automatically-movable means for looking said head in its projected position.
The combination with a suitable case having parallel sidewalls to the inner surface of one of which a stationary centeringhead is secured, a spring-actuated movable centering-head operatively connected to and projected from the opposite side of said case in alinement with said stationary head, having a limited movement transverse to the sides of the case and normally at the limit of its movement toward said stationary head, and gravity-operated automatic means, actuated by the closing of said case, for locking said head in its projected position.
4. The combination with a suitable case having parallel sides and comprising a stationary section and a hinged section the lower edges of the sides of which are adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the sides of said stationary section,stationary centering-heads secured to the inner surface of one side of said case and laterally-movable centeringheads operatively connected to the opposite side of said case in alinement with the stationary heads having a limited movement transverse to the sides of the case and normally at the limit of their movement toward said, stationary heads, of gravity-controlled means actuated by the closing of said hinged section upon said stationary section of the case to limit the movement of said heads away from said stationary heads.
5. The combination with a suitable case having parallel sides and comprising a stationary section and a hinged section the lower edges of the sides of which are adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the sides of said stationary section, stationary centering-heads IIO secured to the inner surface of one side of said case, spring-returnable spindles movable laterally in the opposite side of said case in alinement with said stationary heads and normally at the limit of their movement toward said heads, and plates secured to the inner ends of said spindles having concentric centering-heads, of gravity-controlled means actuated by the closing of said hinged section upon said stationary section of the case to move between said plates and the adjacent side wall to limit the Withdrawal movement of said spindles.
6. The combination with a suitable case having parallel sides and comprising a stationary section and a hinged section the lower edges of the sides of which are adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the sides of said stationary section, stationary centering-heads secured to the inner surface of one side of said case, spring-returnable spindles movable laterally in the opposite side of said case in alinement with said stationary heads and normally at the limit of their movement toward said heads, and plates secured to the inner ends of said spindles having concentric centering-heads, of loosely-pivoted arms which are actuated by the closing of said hinged section upon said stationary section of the case to move between said plates and the adjacent side wall to limit the withdrawal movement of said spindles.
7. The combination with a suitable case having parallel sides and comprising a stationary section and a hinged section the lower edges of the sides of which are adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the sides of said stationary section, stationary centering-heads secured to the inner surface of one side of said case, spring-returnable spindles movable laterally in the opposite side of said case in alinement with said stationary heads and normally at the limit of their movement toward said heads, and plates secured to the inner ends of said spindles having concentric centering-heads, of loosely-pivoted arms, and an automatically returnable vertically-reciprocal bolt engaging said arms and actuated by the closing of the hinged section upon said stationary section of the case and thereby causing said pivoted arms to move between the plates and the adjacent side wall to limit the Withdrawal movement of said spindles.
8. The combination with a suitable case having parallel sides and comprising a stationary section and a hinged section the lower edges of the sides of which are adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the sides of said stationary section, stationary centering-heads secured to the inner surface of oneside of said case, spring-returnable spindles movable laterally in the opposite side of said case in alinementwith said stationary heads and normally at the limit of their movement toward said heads, and plates secured to the inner ends of said spindles having concentric centering-heads, of an antomatically-returnable reciprocal bolt depressed by the closing of the hinged section of the case upon the stationary section, and two arms pivoted adjacent to the lower end of said bolt by which they are engaged and extending in opposite directions- ENGLAND J.
