JOHN WILLIAM HARM, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
TUBULAR PLATE-CASTING BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1916.
Application filed July 21, 1915. Serial No. 41,133.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM HARM, citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tubular Plate-Casting Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in tubular stereotype plate casting boxes and it is an object of the invention to i provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the cast plate is automatically raised relatively to the core as the core is swung from operative position within the cope.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved tubular casting boxes whereby certain important advantages. are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation partly in dotted lines and partly in full lines of a tubular plate cast box having an embodiment of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 except certain of the parts are disclosed in a different adjustment. Fig. 3 is a View in front elevation partly in dotted lines and partly in full lines of my invention as herein set forth. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the pivoted extremity of the core of the cast box illustrating certain details of my invention as herein embodied, the head ring being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective detached of one of the operating arms herein employed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, A denotes a tubular plate cast box of any ordinary or preferred construction and herein disclosed as the Well known duplex type, and wherein is employed the vertically swinging core C coacting in a well known manner with the cope B.
Slidably engaged with the core C is the head ring H and operatively engaged with said head ring at diametrically opposed points are the arms 1 depending from the ring H and having their lower portions pro vided with the inwardly disposed lugs 2, traveling within the longitudinally disposed grooves 23 produced in the core C, and the lower longitudinal marginal portions of the grooves 3 are defined by the outstanding flanges 4, between which the arms 1 travel, said flanges serving as an additional guiding means for the arms 1.
The upper extremities of the arms 1 are provided with the heads 5 adapted to be positioned within the recesses 6 produced in the periphery of the ring H at diametrically opposed points, said head and recesses being of such formation as to afford an effective connection, and in order to maintain the arms 1 against displacement relative to the ring H, I find it of advantage to employ the threaded members 7 engageable with both members the ring II and theheads 5.
Operatively supported by the base 8 of the cast box and at a predetermined point at opposite sides of the core C, are the plates 9 provided with cam slots 10 in which are positioned the rollers 11, mounted upon the stub shafts 12, removably engaged with the arms 1 and I prefer to provide said roller 11 with the flanges 14 adapted to engage the inner faces of the plates 9.
It is to be observed that the slots 10 are so arranged as to automatically cause the head ring H to move upwardly relative to the core C as the core swings from vertical position so that the cast plate will be projected a suflicient distance beyond the outer or free extremity of the core C to permit said cast plate to be readily engaged by the operator and entirely removed from the core. It will also be perceived that upon the core C being turned to a vertical position in order to be properly positioned within the cope B that the head ring H will be auto-- matically returned to its operative position.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that tubular plate casting boxes constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and com paratively inexpensive nature and 18 particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out'mv invention. in practice.
I claim:
1. In combination with a tubular plate cast box including a swinging core, a head ring slidably mounted upon said core and means for moving said ring longitudinally of the core upon swinging movement of the core.
2. In combination with a tubular plate cast box including a movable core a head ring slidably mounted upon the core and means for imparting separate movement to the head ring upon the core in unison with the movement of the core.
3. In combination with a tubular plate cast box including a movable core, means for imparting separate movement to the cast 7 plate upon the core in unison with the movejustment.
ment of the core into an inoperative adi. In combination with a tubular plate cast box including a swlngmgc'ore, a head ring slidably mounted upon the core and stationary means coacting with the head ring for lmparting movement thereto longitudinally of the core during the swinging movement of the core.
In combination with a tubular plate cast box includinga swinging core, a head ring slidab'ly mounted thereon,;and a cam action separate from the core and coacting I with the head ring for imparting movement to the ring longitudinally of the core during the swinging movement of thecore.
6. In combination with a tubular plate cast box including a swinging core, a head ring slidably mounted thereon, an arm engageable with the ring, and a cam member supported independently of the core and coacting with the arm to impart movement to the ring longitudinally of the core during the swinging movement of the core.
7. In combination wi'h a tubular plate east box including a swinging core, a head ring slldably mountedthereon, an arm engageable with the ring, a plate positioned head ring longitudinally of the core during .7
the swinging movement of the core.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
