Be it known that we, HoMnn COOK and CHARLES E. SIMMONS, of Waukegan, in the county of Lake, in the4 State ot Illinois, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms; and we do' hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. A
The nature of our invention consists in providing an ordinaryspiral or coil-spring bed-bottom with combinations of bars in couplets, with-a horizontal bar connecting two couplets, for the purpose of causing every part of the upper frame to settle alike, when pressure is applied to or weight comes upon any particular part of it; also, to sta-y said upper frame from swaying laterally, thus causing its motion to be perpendicular. l
To enable others skilled in the art to makeand use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construe-.- tion and operation.
We construct au ordinary spiral or coil-spring bed-bottom in the usual form, with two frames, the spiral or wit-springs resting upon slats placed across-the-lower frame, the upper frame being covered with canvas, and resting' upon and being` supported alone by the springs, as shown in g. 1, in which A is the upper frame, B the lower frame, G the slat, and F F F are springs. The bars C' C vC C are 4constructedof metal or wood, and have a hole in each end; fllhey are attached in pairs to the horizontal wooden or inetal bar D, on the side, one pair near each end, by a screw or rivet passing through the hole injone end of each of the bars C C C C, as shown in iig. 2. When thus combined, the whole is-attached by similar screwsor rivets through the other end of the bars C C C C, either tothe inside or outside edge ot" the frames A and B, (also to the sides, if desired,) vthe point of attachment to the frame A being directly above the one on the frame B. The bars C C C C are of such a length as that, when the springsar not depressed, the bars will form an obtuse angle of about one hundred and thirty-five degrees at the'point where they are attached to the horizontal bar.v When this combination of bars is attached to the frame of the bed-bottom, as described, and any pressure is applied to or weight comes upon any part of the canvased frame, all parts of the same will descend alike, and each spring in the.
bed-bottom will thus be made to bear its Adue proportionof such pressure or weight. In order to prevent any swaying of the upper frame A,we attach a second setof bars to the frames of the bed-bottom, as shown inv iig. 3, in which C C C' C are'the shortbars and'D is the horizontal bar, all being attached to the frames by the same screws used in attaching the first set, but placed in 'a reversed position, so that the angles of the second set are turned in a direction oppositeto the first, and the horizontal barsD and D being'halved, except at the outer ends, and so placed one above the'other that all the joints connecting the short bars C C C C'and C C CC with said horizontal bars will be in a line; the bars D and D being held together by the clasps E E, said clasps being constructed in any convenient form, and so attached as to p ermit said bars D and D to slide easily through them. This combination will stay the upper frame from swaying.
What we claim as our invention,-and' desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is- The combination of the short bars C C C C with the horizontal bar D, for the purpose of equalizing the pressure upon the upper frame, so that all parts of it shall settle alike. Also, the application of two sets of these bars to the same end or side of the bed-bottom, to stay the upper frame and prevent all swaying, all con structed, combined, and applied substantially as and for thepurposes described.
'h HOMER COOK, "i CHAS. E. SIMMONS.
