SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,116, dated April 8, 1902.
Application tiled January 28, 1902. Serial No. 91,630. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whmn it 71u03/ concern:
Be it known that I, LARsoN A. TWEEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boonville, in the county of Varrick and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doubletree-Eveners; and I d o declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvementsin doubletree-eveners; andit consists in the provision of means whereby jar t0 the Vehicle incident tothe sudden jerk upon the singletrees is prevented.
The invention more specifically consists in the provision of a doubletree which has an eyebolt passing centrally through the same, which bolt is adapted for attachment to a vehicle, and the provision of a spring interposed between the opposite end of said bolt and the edge of the doubletree, and in the provision of similar bolts which are passed through the ends of the doubletree and having springs interposed between the opposite edge of the doubletree from that engaged by the spring on the central bolt, the eyes of the bolts at the ends of the doubletree being adapted for connection with singletrees and by which means the jar is taken up intermediate the singletrees and the bolt which is attached to the vehicle.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described in detail and details specifically defined in the claim, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms a part of this application, and of which drawing I have shown a plan View embodying the improvements of my invention.
Reference being had to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates a doubletree, which is of ordinary construction and is centrally apertured to receive an eyebolt B, having an eye B at one end and a pin C at its opposite end. Said bolt after being passed through the central aperture in the doubletree is normally held in the position shown in the drawing by means of the spring D, which is mounted upon the said bolt B and interposed between the edge of the doubletree and said pin C. At the ends of the doubletree are formed apertures to receive the bolts E, which have eyes E for attachment to the singletrees F and heads G at their opposite ends, against which springs II, interposed between said heads or pins G and the inclined edge of the doubletree, are adapted to bear.
From the foregoing it will be observed that in a doubletree constructed in accordance with my invention a jar or sudden jerk which may be imparted to the same by suddenly starting a team attachment to the singletrees will be taken up by the springs upon the eyebolts at the center and ends of the doubletree, thus causing the vehicle to be drawn steadily without sudden jerks.
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a doubletree having a centrally-disposed aperture, a bolt B having LARSON A. TWEEDY.
