To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that THEODORE KEEUTZ, citizen of the United States, residing at Sweetbriar, in the county of Morton and State of North Dakota, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eveners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to draft appliances and more particularly to eveners, and has for its object to provide an evener of a simple type, including a simple, cheap and efficient means for varying the relative draft of the horses.

Another object is to provide an evener including a casting for the attachment of the swingletrees, which will be extremely simple, and which will be adapted for the quick adjustment of the evener.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan of the present evener; Fig. 2 is an end view on a larger scale; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation; Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the casting removed from the doubletree.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown an evener including a doubletree 5, pivoted for horizontal movement, and havmg castings 6 secured to its rearward face adjacent to its ends. Each of these castings includes an attaching plate 7 carrying a plurality of rearwardly extending spaced ears 8 provided with alining perforations 9 adjacent to their free ends. The outermost ear, indicated at 8, has its opening formed as a key-hole slot, indicated at 9, and disposed with its stem directed upwardly. These alining openings are arranged for the reception of a retaining rod 10 having a head 11 at its inner end and having its outer end bent at right angles as shown at 12 for passage through the stem of the slot 9.

The attaching plate 7 extends oppositely beyond the ears 8 and at its outer end is provided with an opening 13 receiving a bolt l-il passed through the doubletree and inwardly 0f the ears, the attaching plate is provided With lateral wings 15 provided with openings 15 for the reception of the detached ends of the legs 16 of a yoke 17, engaged around the doubletree.

In connection with each of the castings, there is employed a yoke 18 including spaced legs 19 connected at their forward ends by a bight 20 and at their detached ends, the legs are provided with openings 21 for the reception of a vertically extending pin 22. These yokes 18 he with their legs above and below the doubletree with the pins 22 between a pair of the ears 8, in which they are held by the rods 10, and it will be observed that these rods may be removed to allow engagement of the pins 22 in the spaces'bctween the ears 8 interchangeably, and thus the yokes may be adjusted longitudinally of the doubletree. It is to be understood that the swingletrees, in dicatcd at 23, are to be attached to the forward ends of the yokes in any suitable manner.

\Yhat is claimed is:

1. In an evcner, the combination with a doubletree, of castings located at the ends of the doubletree, each of said castings inclnding an attaching plate disposed against the rearward face of the doubletree and carrying a plurality of rearwardly extending spaced ears, said ears having alining perforations adjacent to their rearward edges, a rod removably engaged through said perforations of each casting, fastening devices engaged with the attaching plates and with the doubletree, a swingletree for each end of the doubletree, and attaching members connected with the swingletrees, said attaching members being engaged around the ends of the doubletree and including portions lying between pairs of the ears of the castings, and arranged for interchangeable engagement between the several pairs of cars.

2. A casting for eveners comprising an attaching plate, a plurality of rearwardly extending spaced ears carried by said plate and provided with alining openings adjacent to their free ends, said plate extending longitudinally beyond the ears in both directions and having a fastener receiving opening in one of said extended portions, the other ex tended portion having lateral wings provided with. openings for the reception of fasteners.
