Be it known that I, ERVIN D. TOWNSEND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherry Creek, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vhiflietrees; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in whiffletrees and consists in the provision of a simple and efiicient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail on line 22 of Fig. 1.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a whifiletree having hooks B at the ends thereof, and C designate bolts passing through apertures D in the whifiletree and also through the plates K, and nuts F are mounted upon the threaded ends of the bolts. A coiled spring N is interposed between the plate K and a plate O" which is apertured for the reception of the rods H, passing about thetwo sets of rods as shown. Nuts S are mounted upon the threaded ends of the rods H and the latter pass through the bar T, which has an eye T to which a doubletree may be attached.

By the provision of a whiflletree made in accordance with my invention, a simple and efficient device is afforded which may be used either in connection with or separate from an evener and one which will tend to break the sudden pull coming upon the whiffietree incident to the starting up quickly.

What I claim to be new is said spring A whiflletree having transverse apertures 71 arranged in pairs therein, one edge of the latter being provided'with recesses about the ends of said apertures, bolts passing through said apertures and having heads bearing against the whiflietree opposite said recesses,

apertured plates through which said bolts pass, nuts upon the bolts, other bolts having heads bearing against the bottoms of said recesses, an apertured bar through which the ends of said second referred to bolts pass and against which nuts upon the latter bear, and coiled springs interposed between the whiflietree and said apertured plates.
