Description

WlLLIM G. WATSON, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent lVo. 69,285, dated September 24, 1867.
LAMP FOR SCHOOL-BOOKS.
@Le Srigttnle munt tu it tigres Entert jlntntt mit mntngtntt nt tige stmt T() ALL WllOM l'l MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WATSON, otI Paterson, in the county of Passaic, and State of N'cwJorscy, have invented ccrtainnew and useful Improvements in Book-Clamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of a booleclainp constructed according to my invention.
l5`igure 2 is an end view of the saine.
Figure 5l is a transverse section of the same taken in the lino .ir .u of iig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
The object of this invention, designed more especially for the use of children, is to provide a cheap, simple, and compact device for carrying any desired number of school or other books; and it consists in a tightening)Th nut and screw, in combination with a roller-handle, a traine and binding cord, whereby the desired object is eilectually secured. t
'.lo enable others to understand the nature and construction ot' my invention, l will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents a frame, composed of a flat strip of sheet inet-al, the two ends oi' which are turned up at right angles to the main o1' central portion thereof, as shown at a. Situated between the upper parts of these turned-up portions a is a roller, B, which serves the purpose of a handle for the device, and the pivots a Z1 ot' which may be formed by the ends of a cylindrical rod, a*, passing centrally through the same, as shown in dotted outline in fig. l, and working in suitable holes or bearings formed in the parts a, just mentioned. One ofthe ai'orcsaid pivots, b', is'formed with a thread, and constitutes the tightening-screw ot' the clamp, and is furnished at thc outer side of the portion a through which it passes with a tightening-nut, c. The roller-handle B is eon structed with a central longitudinal slot, c', at or near each end of which is a lateral or radial slot, d. 'l'hc binding cord C is passed through the slots c e', as indicated in iig. 3, and also in dotted outline in fig. 1. The ends of the said binding cord, after being passed through suitable holes in the central or main portion of thc frame A, are attached to the ends of a flatplate or strip, d, which may be made of stift` sheet metal or other suitable material.
By turning the roller-handle B upon its longitudinal axis, 1n one direction or the other, as the ease may require, the binding cord may be wound thereon or beunwound therefrom to bring the strip d at any desired distance from the central portion of the frame A. The books are placed between thc strips cl and the central part, just mentioned, of the frame A, asv shown in red outline in iig. 1, and the roller-handle is then turned, as horeinbefore set forth, to draw upward the strip (Z, and thus tightly clamp the books-between the Said strip and thc-frame A, whereupon the nut c is turned, so as to be brought against the adjoining'side ofthe portion a with suilieicnt tightn ess to prevent the said roller-handle from turning, andthe books being thus secured in the clamp may be carried by grasping the roller-handle thereof' in the hand, the books being suspended, as it were, from tho said handle. i
What I claim as my i1'1vention,fand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination oi' the tighteningmut c and screw b with the roller-handle B, frame A, and binding cord t), substantially and for the purpose specified.
W. C. WATSON.
