Letters Patent Nol 74,867, dated February 11,` 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
T0 ALL' W-HOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ABA HUND, of' Yonkers, in the county ci' Westchester, und State of New York, have invented certainnew und useful Improvements in Buckles; land I do hereby declare that the following is e. full, clear, and exact description of the same. reference being had to the acoompanying'drawngs, markings-portion of this speoioation, in which- Figure 1. is a plan view of a buckle constructed according to' my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of Vthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in'both-gures.
This invention relates to thatcluss of buckles in which a tongue designed to pass through the strap is dispensed with, and its object is to providea buckle ofthe variety mentioned,'hy the use of which the strap shall .be more eiectua'ily' prevented from slipping than is found practicable with those hitherto devised, and which muy, furthermore, be very cheaply manufactured.
The invention consists in' a spring so combined with an .extension formed upon -tne clamping-tongue as to insure the requisitev clamping or holding-action thereof upon vthe strap, even when notension is exerted upon the latter. v
The invention further censists'in a novel constrnctionof the frameof the buckle, whereby the same may be made ata very moderate cost. i
To enable .others to understand thenature and .constriction of my invention, Iwill p'roceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
Thefraine, A, of the buckle may be -madoof eheetmetal, or other suitable material, and at -one end 'of` its dat portion, a, isl turned upward, show-n more 'ully at a', lin iig. 2, Fornucd in this tprned-up portion, a', is a slot, a, and inthe adjacentouter part of the dat portion is a similar slot,'b; there being a transverse bar, b,
lformed between' the two slots4 just' mentioned, around which is looped and sewed one end of the strap, B. At
theopposite end of the frame, A, are two spurs-or `arms, b, between 'the extremities ot' which is pivoted a transverse roller, C, which is iinely tintedlongitudinally, as indicated in iig. 1. Pivoted between the rearmost endportins of the two arnxs, b, as shown at c", is the clamping-tongue D, the forward end of which may be grooved, as shown in iig.2, and is at such distance Vfrom the iluted roller,.just hereinbefore described, that when the strap, B, is placed between such roller and the end of the clamping-tongue, 0, it will be tightly clamped, a's shown in iig. 2, and be thus securely buckled. The inner end of the tongue, C, is extendedback, so as to form an extension, c', underneath which is Vplaced a spring, c*, which.l by pressing upward `upon the said extension, forces down the' tongue itself, so that the end of the latter mayA compress the strap against the roller C, even when there is no strain or tensionA exerted upon therisaid strap, the end of the tongue in no case passing' below the axis of the relleno, so that any strain upon the strap, by tending to draw the eind`of the` tongue inward still nearer to the roller, will only cause the strap to be held still more tightly. The end'of the strap, when thus `huckled, .n:n7.y be pa'sscd through the slot a"in lieu of the loop ordinarily elnployed to'hold downs-such end.
What I olainrasmy invention, and desirs to sefcnre by Letters Patent, is-- 1. 'lhe combination of the spring c* with the extension e oi? the clamping-tongue 'Drsubstantisllyss und .-for the purpose specified.
2.l The frame A, constructed with its ,end a4 turnedl at right angles toits dat -portion o, slotted as shown "at a b', and provided with arms b, substantially as and for the 'purposespecified ASA HURD.
