UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO A. LEHMAN, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
CHATELAIN E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,611, dated October 1, 1901.
Application filed June 4, 1901 To all whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO A. LEHMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hoboken, in the countyof Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohatelaines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to animprovement in chatelaines; and it has for its object to provide a chatelaine which may be easily and effectually locked against unintentional removal from the waist, belt, or band of the wearer, the chatelaine being employed to support a bag or other article.
A further object is to provide a chatelaine having certain improvements in the construction, form, and arrangement of the several parts thereof.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents in perspective my improved chatelaine in connection with an apparel-belt and supporting a bag, the chatelaine being in its closed or locked position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of the chatelaine in its closed position. Fig. 3 is a back view of the same. Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section through the chatelaine in the plane Fig. 5 is a similar view of the chatelaine in its open position, and Fig. 6 is a partial front view of the chatelaine in its open position.
The chatelaine comprises a hook having an ornamental front plate 1 and a plain back plate 2 and a swinging spring-actuated locking-plate 3, hinged to the lower end of the back plate of the hook. The locking-plate and the hook form together an elongated loop for the reception of an apparel-belt 4 or any other suitable band fitted to embrace the waist of the wearer.
The chatelaine-bag 5 is represented as supported by the chatelaine; but the chatelaine may be employed for supporting any other desired article instead of the bag.
The outer faces of the front plate 1 of the hook and the lock-plate 3 may be partially covered with leather 6, if so desired. The lower end of the back plate 2 of the hook is provided with a pair of uprising ears 7 and S, which are preferably struck up from the L Serial No. 63,113. (N0 model.)
metal which forms the hook. The locking plate 3 is substantially L-shaped in cross-sec tion and the inwardly-projected branch of the plate is provided with a pair of ears 9 and 10, which are hinged to the ears 7 and 8 on the back plate of the hook by means of a pintle 11. The free end of the plate is preferably provided with an ornamental thumb-piece 12, which serves the double purpose of a stop for limiting the inward movement of the locking-plate and also as a means for permit- The means which I have shown for holding the plate in its closed position under spring tension comprises a plate 13 of spring metal,
2 of the hook, near its lower end, which plate 13 is provided with two branches 15 and 16, which bear against a downwardly-extended lip 17 at the inner end of the short branch of the L-shaped locking-lever. A third arm 18, between the arms 15 and 16 of the plate 13, is rolled into the form of a loop or eye for securely locking an article-supporting ring 19 for use in attaching articles to the chatelaine.
By the use of the structure hereinabove described I am enabled to provide a chatelaine which can be very quickly and easily attached to a belt or band and then looked against unintentional displacement therefrom.
The structure is materially simplified by providing a simple plate which serves the double purpose of attaching the article-supporting ring to the chatelaine and also as a spring for the locking-plate.
It is evident that changes might be resorted to in the form, construction, and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth; but
lVhat I claim is 1. A chatelaine comprising integral front and back plates forming a hook, a lockingplate hinged to the back plate and forming, when closed, a continuation of the front plate to complete an elongated loop, a supportingring and a spring carried by the back plate for yieldingly holding the locking-plate closed and for connecting the ring to the back plate, substantially as set forth.
ting the ready swinging open of the said plate.
riveted at 14. to the back face of the back plate 2. A chatelaine comprising integral front and back plates forming a hook, a spring-aeplate secured to the back plate having an arm engaging the locking-plate for yieldingly 15 holding it closed and another arm wrapped around the ring for connecting the ring to the back plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I havesigned my name, in pres- 26 once of two witnesses, this 29th day of May OTTO A. LEHMAN;
