Be it known that I, ALEXANDER RHODES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in 'the county of Itasca, r:State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ride-Carriers; and l. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in article carriers, and is directedmore particularly to a rifle carrier adapted for use when marching, riding or at other times when the use 4of both hands is desired and yet it is essential or expedient that the rifle be at hand and in readiness for instant use.

An object of the present invention resides in the provision of a carrier of the above character which may be quickly and conveniently applied to and removed from its operative position on the shoulder, will occupy but little space, is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction and at the same time entirely. efl'icient 1n use.

A further and important object of theY invention is to provide such a construction as will hold the riiie on the shoulder of the user and in such position that it may be instantly grasped by the butt so that the riile may beinstantly disengaged Jfrom the carrier and thrown into position for action, when- .the butt of the rifle is forced rearwardly.

. With the above and other objects of similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the carrier is shown as consisting of an elongated plate 5 of rust prooi2 metal of suitable gage that is curved 8 nreperly Specification et Letters Patent. longitudinally at one end as shown at 6 to engage and conform to the shoulder ot a person employing the same and be supported therefrom as shown most clearly in Fig. 1. To retain the plate against displacement on the shoulder there is attached at the upper or curved end of the plate an adjustable strap 7 which is adapted to pass downwardly at an angle across the back of the wearer and be secured to vthe belt or other portions of the garments. A second strap 8 is atl tached at 9 to the other or lower end of the plate 5 and adapted to pass diagonally across the chest and be also secured to the belt. This strap 8 is likewise adjustable as will be understood. Attached by rivets 10 or other suitable means to the front face of the plate 5 adjacent its curved end is a second plate 11 between which and the plate 5 are disposed and secured by rivets, upper and lower leaf springs 13, the ends of each of which project beyond the sides of said plate and are oppositely curved outwardly therefrom as shown :at 14. Spaced rods 15 are secured to and extend longitudinally of the plate 11 and have hinged thereto as at 16 the inner ends of a pair of clamping elements 17, said elementsextending between the opposite ends of the spring 13 and being yieldably held thereby in contacting clamping relation. The tree end portions 18 of the clamping elements 17 are outwardly dared Vas shown to facilitate the introduction therebetween oit the firearm to be carried.

1n use, the carrier is applied to the shoul der as shown in Fig. 1 and the straps 7 and adjusted to hold it securely in position. When marching, riding or at other times when the unimpeded use of both hands is desired, the rifle, gun or other firearm is positioned with its barrel disposed between the elements 1,7, the latter being clamped firmly upon the barrel under the influence of the springs 13 so that the tirearm will be rigidly held in place against 'swinging and accidental dislodgment.
