To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CARL 0. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Oombined Collar-Button and Necktie-Retainer, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in necktie-fasteners; and the object is to provide an effective, simple, and ornamental device for retaining the necktie in position which may be conveniently attached to the collarbutton and removed therefrom.

With the above object in view the inven tion consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out'in the claims, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a construction embodying my invention, the same being shown in operative position; Fig. 2, a detail section through one of the jaws; Fig. 3,

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, A designates a plate having a casing B arranged at its center and upon its outer face and provided with a central perforation C to receive the notched end of the shaft D of the collar-button E. Arranged in this casing and having pressure portion F projecting normally through an opening in the casing is a depressible locking member G, formed with an opening H, registering with the perforations O of the casing when the locking member is depressed, but having its lower wall normally covering a portion of said opening. This locking member is held normally in an upward position by means of a spring I, positioned in the casing. When the notched end of the shank of the collar-button enters the opening of the casing, said locking member is depressed until the notch is in position to be engaged, which engagement is efiected by the upward movement of said member, caused by the section of the spring. The plate is thus held in position upon the collar-button until the locking member is depressed to disengage the notch of the shank of the button.

Secured to the plate at each end is a vertically-extending plate J, having outwardlyextending flanges K formed intermediately of its ends, which flanges are formed with notches or teeth K, as clearly illustrated. At its upper end said plate is formed with a spring-arm L and upon each side of said arm with a loop M. This plate, constructed as above set forth, constitutes the fixed jaw of the necktie fastener or clamp.

Hinged to the stationary jaws are the stationary jaws N, carrying pintles, which are positioned in the loops M and formed with spring-arms O, bent to engage arms L of the stationary jaws, so as to retain said swinging member either in a closed or opened position. Said member is formed on its inner side with points or projections P to coact with the teeth or notches of the stationary jaw, so as to securely hold the tie. Each of saidmovable jaws upon its outer side is ornamented, as illustrated, so as to present a neat and attractive appearance.

In operation the plate is attached to the collar-button and the band of the tie or that portion extending around the collar inserted between the jaws, where it is firmly held. The fastener will then present the appearance of two ornamental plates disposed on opposite portion of the opening 0 of the plate, so as to engage the notched end of the dollar-button IOO shank. The other end of the split ring constitutes a spring-arm and normally holds the engaging arm R in its upward position;

In the modified construction illustrated in Fig. 8 I have dispensed with the casing and spring locking member and formed the body portion of the fastener of a piece of wire bent in the form of an elongated loop, the upper portion Q of which is formed at its center with a downwardly-extending spring-loop R to em brace the collar-button.

It will be understood that various modifications might be made in the construction for attaching the fastener to the collar-button, and I do not desire to limit myself to the exact details herein shown and described for accomplishing this purpose.

' Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. A necktie-fastener, comprising a plate carrying means intermediately of its ends for attaching it to a collar-button, stationaryjaws at the respective ends of said plate and disposed transversely thereof, and swinging jaws pivoted at one end to the stationaryjaws, substantially as described.

2. A necktie-fastener, comprising a body portion having means 'intermediately of its ends for attaching it to a collar-button, stationary jaws at the ends of said body portion having teeth formed thereon, swinging jaws pivoted to the stationary jaws, and also carrying engaging portions or teeth, and means for retaining said swinging jaws in a closed position, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a collar-button, having a notched shank, of a plate formed intermediately of its ends with a casing having an opening for the insertion of said shank, a depressible locking member positioned in said casing for engaging the notch of the shank and preventing disengagement thereof from the plate, a spring for holding said depressible member normally outward, fixed jaws carried by the ends of said plate, and swinging jaws pivoted to said fixed jaws, substantially as set forth.

4. A necktie-fastener, comprising a body portion having means intermediately of its ends for attaching the same to a collar-button, stationary jaws carried by the respective ends of said plates, each of said jaws formed at one end with a centrally-disposed springarm and loops disposed on opposite sides of said arm and at some distance inward from the free end of the arm, and swinging jaws having pintles engaging in said loops of the stationary jaws, and formed with centrallydisposed spring-arms for coacting with the spring-arms of the stationary jaws, substan-
