By turning the rod 15 in the proper direction the heads or flanges 8 and 19 may be drawn or clamped against the ends of the platen 4 with any desired force. The said device18 also comprises an integral collar or circular shoulder 27 forward of the flange 19, and in front of the part. 27 is a circular ledge or bearing 28, from which extends forwardly an integral hollow cylindrical hub or bearing 29.
On diametrically-opposite sides the collar or shoulder 27 is preferably flattened, as at 30, and through these portions of said collar are formed slots or openings 31 radially of the axis or bore of the device for the introduction and accommodation of the shan ks 32 of two segmental friction devices 33, preferably formed of sheet metal. The inner free ends of said shanks are slotted or forked, as at 34, to surround the inner end of a pin 35, which bears against the solid boss 26, and provided with a ixedcollar or circular shoulder 36, which bears against the forked ends of the said shanks 32 and confines the same on said pin between itself and the said boss.
Within the hub or bearing 29 is fitted a screw plug or bearing 37, which. is perforated centrally, as at 138, to form a bearing for the pin 35 to slide in axially of the device 18 and of the platen. The said screw-plug has an exterior thread, which is screwed into an interior thread in the end bar 39 of the platen carrier or frame 40.
Exterior-ly of the ange 19 and preferably litting the same snugly is a platen ratchet ring or Wheel 4,1, having in this case teeth 42 on its side, adapted to be engaged by adriving-pawl 43 on a rock-shaft 44, having an actuating-handle 45, as customary in the Yost machine, and the said ratchet-Wheel has also in this instance a series of seats or depressions 46 around its periphery, adapted for the usual spring-pressed holdfast-roller 47; but as far as the main features of my invention are concerned some other form or construction of ratchet-Wheel may be employed instead of that herein vshown and described. The said ratchet-wheel is also formed on its outer side with a circular flange 48 in a plane at right angles to its axis, and the said flange is adapted to a circular seat or ledge 49 on a ring 50, which itself is seated on the bearing or hub 28 and is held pressed against the face or front side of the collar 27 by means of three screws 5l, the shanks of which pass through holes in the said ring 50 and into tapped holes 52 in the side of the hub or bearing 28, the heads of the screws overlapping the side of the ring 50, and thus holding it lrmlv in position.

which in turn is positively connected to the platen, preferably by means of pins 54, secured at diametrically-opposite points to the flange 19 and entering holes or sockets formed in the ends of the core 5 of the platen. Th ns the device 18 is so attached to the platen as thatit always turns therewith,and the ratchet wheel or ring is so connected to the platen as that it also normally turns therewith, the connection being effected through or by means of the segmental friction devices, which have a toggle-like action under the pressure of the coiled spring 24. The said spring acting on the solid boss 26 and the latter acting on the shanks of the segmental clutches, the clutch devices are straightened out or brought into substantially the same vertical plane, whereby the edges of the segments are forced outwardly or radially against the interior surface of the ratchet-Wheel, thereby producing sufficient friction to enable the ratchet-wheel to turn the platen through said clutching devices and the device 18 when the said ratchetwheel is turned by the line-spacing pawl. The outward pressu reof the spring 24 to produce the desired friction of the clutches is limited or resisted by the sliding pin 35, the
outer end 0f which abuts against the npturned 95 end 55 of a lever 56, which is pivoted at 57 on the under side of the end bar 39 and which is provided at its forward end with a thumbpiece or handle 58 and with a lip or projection 59, which bears against the said end bar 39, and thus prevents any movement of tha said lever, and hence the sliding, pin under the pressure of said spring.
In the positions of the parts at Fig. 5 the clutches are in frictional engagement with the ratchet-wheel, and hence when said wheel is turned by the line-spacing mechanism the platen is caused to rotate therewith through the intermediate devices hereinbefore described; but when the parts are in the positions shown at Fig. 6 the platen is adapted to be turned by the hand-wheel 14 or otherwise independently of the ratchet-wheel, which may then remain stationary and which will be held perfectly still by the pressure-roller 47. The parts are brought into the positions shown at Fig. 6 by pressing the linger-piece 58 outwardly or in the direction of the arrow at Fig. 1, thus causing the upwardly-projecting end 55 of said lever to force inwardly the sliding piu 35, and thereby break the togglejoint or cause the edges of the segments to recede from the surface of the ratchet-wheel, in this action the collar 36 pressing upon the shanks of the segments and forcing them inwardly and the end of the sliding pin forcing the slide 25 in the same direction and causing a compression of the coiled spring. As long as the sliding pin 35 is held pressed in and the clutches are out of frictional engagement with the ratchet-wheel the platen may be rotated freely Without turning said wheel, and hence the platen may be moved through either long or short arcs or revolved IIO to any desired extent in either direction for bringing the ruled lines or blank spaces on the printed matter to the printing-point. When the actuating-lever 56 is released the coiled spring 24 immediately forces out the sliding pin and at the same time causes the toggle-levers or segmental clutches to again straighten out to the position shown at Fig. 5 and again frictionally engage the ratchetwheel, so as to restore it into operative relation with the platen. In practice the edges of the segments may be moved only a very minute distance in order to effect the disengagement of said ratchet-wheel from and itsV rengagement with the platen or, what is the same thing, to release the platen from the ratchet-Wheel or the line-spacing mechanism and again connect it therewith.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen,a ratchet-Wheel,a detent therefor, a clutch, aspring, operating normally to hold said clutch in frictional engagement with said ratchet-wheel, and means adapted to be actuated by the hand of the user for overcoming the pressure of the spring and releasing the clutch so as to enable the platen to be turned independently of the ratchetwheel While the hand of the user is overcoming the pressure of the spring.
2. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen,a ratchetwheel,a detent therefor, a clutch, a spring, operating normally to hold said clutch in frictional engagement with said ratchet-wheel, a sliding pin opposing said spring, and means for moving said pin to overcome the pressure of the spring and release the ratchet-Wheel,whereby the platen may be turned independently of the ratchetwheel and the clutch.

In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a platen, a hollow stem or socket secured to one endof Said platen bya ange 19 and having a bearing at 2() for said platen, a collar or shoulder as 27, a ledge as 28, and a hub as 29, a ring as 50, a ratchet-wheel mounted on said flange 19 and said ring 50, a detent for said ratchet-wheel, a pair of segmental clutches having each a shank which is accommodated in a slot or opening in said collar or shoulder, a sliding pin or rod connected to the inner ends of said shanks, a coiled spring within said socket, a plunger pressed outwardly by said spring, and means for mov- 'f ing the pin inwardly against the pressure of said spring.
7. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, the device 18 secured thereto and comprising the fiange 19, the bearing 20,
the socket 2l, the slotted collar 27, the ledge- 28 and the hub 29, a ring as 50 seated on said ledge, a ratchet-wheel seated on said flange and on said ring, a detent for said ratchetwheel, a plug or bearing as 37 for said hub, a pin or rod as 35 supported in a perforation in said plug or bearing, a pair of segments having shanks which pass through the slots in the collar 27 and are connected to the inner end of said pin or rod, a coiled spring within said socket pressing outwardly against said pin or rod and said shanks and thereby causing the said segments to frictionally engage With said ratchet-wheel, and means for forcing the said pin or rod inwardly against the pressure of said spring so as to release such frictional engagement.

In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a platen, a socket secured Within the core thereof and containing a coiled spring, a loosely-mounted ratchet-wheel, a detent therefor, and a pair of clutching devices carried by the socket device and held normally in frictional engagement with said ratchetwheel by the pressure of said spring.

In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a socket secured Within the core thereof and containing a coiled spring, a loosely-.mounted ratchet-wheel, a detent therefor, a pair of clutching devices carried by the socket device, and held normally in engagement with said ratchet-wheel by the pressure of said spring, and means for overcoming the pressure of the spring and releasing said clutching devices.

In a type-writing machine,the combination of a platen, a socket device secured Within the core thereof and carrying at its outer end a pair of clutching devices, a ratchet-wheel mounted upon said socket device, a detent for said ratchet-wheel, a spring Within the latter for act-ing on said clutching devices to cause them to frictionally engage said ratchet-Wheel, and a slide for also acting on said clutching devices to break their engagement with said Wheel.

In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a head attached at one end thereof and comprising the hub 7, flange 8 and hollow shank 9, a hand-wheel mounted on said shank, the stud or pivot 12 on the end bar seated within said hollow shank, a flanged socket attached to the platen at its opposite end and extending within the core hereof, the threaded rod 15 connecting the said socket with the said head, a ratchetwheel mounted loosely on said flanged socket, a detent for said ratchet-wheel, a springpressed clutching mechanism carried by said socket and operating to normally connect said ratchet-wheel with said platen, a sliding pin for freeing said ratchet-wheel, and means for moving said pin.
12. Inatype-writingmachine,the combination of a platen, a line-space ratchet-wheel,
a detent therefor, means for rotating said ratchet-wheel, a platen-head carryinga clutch adapted to engage said ratchet-wheel, a spring acting normally to eect such engagement, a sliding pin for closing said spring, and means, independent of the platen, for moving said pin againstfthe pressure of the spring to re lease said ratchet-wheel and permit the platen to be turned in either direction.
13. In a type-writing machine,tl1e combination of a platen, a line-space ratchet-wheel, a detent therefor, means for rotating the ratchet-wheel, a platen-head, a clutch carried thereby and normally frictionally engaging said ratchet-wheel, a spring-pressed plunger mounted within said head and abutting said clutch, and a sliding pin to coact with said plunger.
14. In atype-writing machine,the combination of a platen, a platen-head secured at one end thereof, a line-space ratchet-wheel, having a plunger and engaging said head, a de'- tent for said ratchet-wheel, a pair of clutching-segments having shanks thatare inserted Within said head, a spring-pressed plunger abutting said shanks, a sliding pin opposing said plunger, and a lever for actuating said pin.
15. In atype-writing machine,the combination of a platen, a platen-head provided with a socket interiorly of said platen, a springpressed plunger within said socket, a linespace ratchet-wheel loosely mounted on said head, a detent therefor, means for rot-ating said ratchet-wheel, and a clutch comprising two segments carried by said head and held normally in frictional engagement with said ratchet-wheel by the pressureof said plunger.
16. In a type-writing machine,tl1e combination of a platen, a platen-head provided with a socket interiorly of said platen, a springpressed plunger arranged within said socket, a line-space ratchet-wheel loosely mounted on said head, a detent therefor, means for rotating the ratchet-wheel, a clutch comprising two segments carried by said head and held normally in-frictional engagement with said ratchet-wheel by the press u re of said plunger, and means independent of said plunger for overcoming the pressure thereof to release the clutch and permit the platen to be rotated in either direction independently of the ratchet-wheel.
