To all w/wm it may colmena Be it known that I, J A. li. SMrrH, a citizen of the United States` residing in Stamford, in the county of' Fairi'ield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tally-strip mechanism, and is in the nature of an improvenient upon the )atent to F. A. l'lart, No. 1,281,160, dated betobeie, uns.
Instead of feeding the tally-strip and carbon-strip from the same roll as in said patent, separate rolls are provided, the, two strips being wound on a common receiving rol] after passingr around the. platen.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated herein, the tally-strip delivery roll is provided at each end with a disk having a beveled friction edge, which is vii-ldalily enpaged by a suitable friction brakwmember, provision being made of a. manually-operable member for witlnlrawineh both of said friction members simultaneously to ineffective position, so as to enable the tally-strip to be drawn forward by the hands without subjecting it to` great strain.
Provision may be made of a knurled head connected with the receiving roll, so that the roll may be easily manipulated to wind or unwind strips.
The carbon-strip delivery roll may be supported in the tally-strip device by providing at one end a revoluble member or head having a split tubular portion of suitable resiliency to insert in the hollow end of a core on which the carbon-sheet is wound. and a pin passing through a slot in a plate at one side of the tally-strip mechanism, said slot having an open end to facilitate removal of the in and the carbon-strip roll from the macfiine. On the outer side of the slotted plate or member, provision may be made of a spring device supported on the pin and pressing against the outer side of the slotted plater` so as to exert a braking action on the carbon-strip delivery roll.

In practice, the carbon-strip and the tallystrip are passed around the platen and secured to the common receiving roll and a work-sheet is passed around the platen outside of the carbon-strip. When typing of one line has been completed, line-spacing of the platen is effected in the usual manner. and by suitable means the action of the lineN space mechanism is transmitted to the common receiving roll to draw the carbon-strip and tally-stri) forward to a new position for typing. IlVhen the typing is completed, the last writing on the tally-strip is at. a considerable dista-nee from the receiving roll, and the tally-strip must be advanced to bring the last written line thereon to a position adjacent the common receiving roll, in order to allow the tally-strip to be severed by drawing,r the same against a fixed knife, which is mounted in the usual position just below the receiving roll.
This advance of the last Writing lino on the tally-strip may be effected by operating the line-space mechanism until the last line of writing has advanced the desired distance, or, since the method just described involves the taking of considerable time, the tally-strip may be grasped by the hands and pulled upward. The second method is very expeditious, but puts considerable strain on the tally-strip when the friction brake devices are positioned to resist the same. In order to obviate such strain during the drawingr forward of the tally-strip, the friction members are withdrawn to ineffective position by manually operated means.
Before severing the used portion of the tally-strip, the portions of the tally-strip and carbon-strip carried by the receivingr roll must be removed therefrom. The carbon-strip is then rewound until its leading edge is drawn back of the knife, This enables a portion of the carbon-strip to be used repeatedly until it becomes unfit for vWhen this condition is reached, the used portion of the carbon-strip is severed and a new portion brought into use.

Provision is also made ot a miriam-strip B wound upon a hollow eore or roll 3G, whiffh is supported at its lett-hand end by a member 3T romprising a split-expanding tube or head 3S. proieeting into the end ot the eore or roll 3G and seeured hv suitable devices R9 to the enlarged head of u pin 4H extending' through au open slot ll in the plate 22. A beveled disk 42 maY be inserted between the enlarged head ot pin and the plate 22 to properly position the pin, and also to serve as a spool-head for the Core Bo, on which the carbon-strip is ivound. At its outer end7 the pin 4t) is provided with :i reduced threaded portion 423, on which is mounted a. nut 44 having a tubular portion adapted to enter the open end of a sleeve or hollow Cylinder 45, and to eompress a spring 4G between the mit 44 and a shoulder 4T formed in said sleeve 45.
This spring pressure Will urge the sleeve 45 and the disk 42 toward each other, so as to press the same against the opposite 'faces ot plate 22 to resist the turning of the member 3T, and, consequently, ot' the core The pressure ot' the parts on plate 22 will tend to prevent Withdrawal ot the pin 40 from the open end of the slot 4l, and such pressure may be adjusted by turning the nut 44 on the portion 43.
At its other end, the eore 3G is carried by a member 48 provided with a split-expanding tube or head 49 similar to head 3S und inserted in the end ot the core 36. The member 48 is also provided with a pin 4() extending through a slot 4l in the plate 23 and havingr iixed thereon a disk 5U simila r to disk 42. On the outer side ot plate 223, the pin 4() is provided with a collar 51 to be engaged by a latch 52 pivoted at 53 on the plate 23, and having a projection extending inwardly from its lowest end which may engage in either one of tivo depressions 54, so as to hold the latch either in the fulllino position, shown in Figure l, with a concave portion thereof fitting over the collar 51, or in the dot-and-dash line position in which the collar 51 is released to enable the pin to be Withdrawn from the open slot 4l in the )late 23.
In lase tie core 36 is to be removed from the machine, the latch 52 will be moved to inettective position, and the sleeve 45, shown at the, left in Figure 2, drawn outwardly to relieve the pressure on the outer surface oi plate 22. The core 3G and the supportingr members 37 and 48 ma)7 then be withdrawn trom the tally-strip mechanism, the splitesl/)nadine tubes or heads 38 and 49 withdrawn from the old eore 3G and inserted in the open ends ot another core having a carbon-strip wound thereon, and the assembled parts placed in the machine by moving the pins 40 into the slots 41, the sleeve 4.3 being pressed outwardly at this time. Upon moving the pins to the bottoms of the slots -l-t. the lateh 52 may be shifted to the full-line position, shown in Figure l, to secure the right-hand pin and member 48 in position.

The tally-strip A and carbon-strip B may be passed around the platen and outside of a rod 58 toa receiving roll 59 havin a slot 60 in which the ends of the two strips are inserted, the rod 58*a serving to deflect the strips A and B sufficiently to prevent eng/agement with the shaft 20. A work-sheet is then inserted, but guided by the rear paper-table 14, between the feed-rolls l5 and the platen 10, and moved upwardly to position it properly with respect to the printing point. Typing may then be effected on the work-sheet (l and the corresponding carbon copy produced on the tallystrip A.
When a line of typin has been completed, a line-space lever not shown) may be actuated to move a slide 6l, which, by means of a pawl 62 thereon, will turn a ratchet-wheel 63 and line-space the platen 10. The actuating movement of the slide 61 will actuate a link 64 pivoted at 65 to an arm 6G, and thereby actuate the latter to cause a pawl 67 to actuate a ratchet 68 on the shaft 20, the pawl 67 being yieldably held in engagement with the ratchet 68 by means of a spring 69. This line-space actuation of shaft 2O will be transmitted by gears 70 thereon to a gear 71 secured to the roll 59, and cause the latter to draw the tally-strip and carbon-strip forward one line-space. The line-space mechanism is, in general, the same as that disclosed in said atent No. 1,281,160.
When the work is completed, the last line typed on the tally-strip is at a considerable distance from the usual severing knife 72, which is located close to the receiving roll, The tally-strip A and the carbon-strip B are then unrolled from the receiving roll 59, preferably by means of a knurled head 73 secured to the roll, and the carbon-strip B rewound by means of the handle 57 until the leading edge thereof is drawn past the knife. A finger-piece 74 is then depressed to swing about rod 31, a bail comprising two arms 7 5, connected by a bar 76, and pins 77 extending under the brake-arms 29. This will release the tally-strip roll to enable the tally-strip to be drawn upward by the hands of the operator until the last line ty ed thereon is above the knife 72. The ta lystrip may then be severed, and a fresh portion thereof advanced with the leading end of the carbon-strip to the receiving roll 59 and connected therewith by inserting the leading ends of the two strips in the slot G0. The linger-piece T4 may then be restored to itsl normal position` and a new piece of work started. The leading portion of the carbonstrip can, therefore, be used over and over untilit becomes too much worn and may then be severed from the rest of the strip, and a fresh portion brought into use.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the imrovements may be used without others.
aving thus described my invention, I ciaim:
V1., In 'a tally-strip device, in combination, a tally-strip roll from which the tally-strip is fed to the platen, disks, one for each end of the tally-strip roll, having beveled edges, a brake device comprising pivoted arms having suitable frictional members to co-operatc with the beveled edges of said disks, a pivoted bail having arms extending under the brake arms, and a manually-operable member connected to said bail for actuating the same to release the brake arms.
2. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a tally-strip roll having disks at the ends thereof, a carbon-strip roll, a platen around which the tally-strip and carbonstrip are fed with the carbon-strip outside, a single receiving roll for both strips, spring-pressed brake members normally engaging said disks, a manually-operable member, and means whereby actuation of said member will withdraw both of said brake members to permit the tally-strip to be drawn forward readily.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a tally-strip roll having disks at the ends thereof, a carbon-strip roll, a platen around which the tally-strip and carbonstrip are fed with the carbon-strip outside, a single receiving roll for both strips, spring-pressed brake members normally engaging said disks, a ivoted releasing device having arms exten ing beneath the brake members, a bar connecting the arms, andfa manually-operable member whereby the releasirg device may be actuated.
