To the above and other ends which will hereinafter aaaear m invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. may be employed in various styles of typewriting or like machines, wherever found available.
' The carriage of the Remington portable machine comprises a basel on which are supported carriage end plates 2 each formed with a foot piece 3 by which the associated end plate is fixedly secured to the base 1. The left-hand endplate 2 is apertured to receive a fixed bearing sleeve 4 that supports one end of a longitudinally displaceable and removable platen shaft 5. This shaft at its left-hand end portion is received in a central bearing Opening in a platen head 6 secured to the wooden core 7 ofa cylindrical platen by wood screws8. The platen as'a whole is designated by the reference numeral 9, and the usual rubber cover or sheath is designated by the reference numeral 9 Mounted on the hub 10 of the platen head 6 is a line spacing wheel 11 provided with peripheral ratchet teeth 12. The line spacing wheel 'is secured to the platen head by headed machine screws 1 3 that are received at their threaded ends in tapped openings 14: in the platen head." Any suitable line spacing mechanism may coact with the line spacing wheel to effect regular extents of line spacing of the platen. In the present instance I have illustrated a portion of the usual line spacing pawl 15 which may be actuated in the ordinary manner to intermittently rotate the platen for regular line spacing. Coacti'ng with the ratchet teeth 12 of the line spacingwheel is the usual roller detent 16, pressed .firmly be tween adjacent teeth of said wheel by a com paratively heavyspring 17 secured at its lower endby screws 18' to an upstanding bracket arm 19 onthe foot piece 3. The purpose of this detent is to normally hold the platen againstaccidental rotative displace ment and to assure an accurate positioning of the platen in any given regular hne space position when the platen s turned by the line spacing pawl 15, or by a finger wheel on the platen shaft. When, however,
irregular, variable, or fractional. line spacing to be effected it is necessary, in the present construction, to release the spring pressed roller detent 16 from the teeth of the line spacing wheel and to apply a braking action against the platen to hold it against accidental rotative displacement from any irregular or fractional line space position to which it may be turned.
In accordance with the present invention I attain these results by the following means From an inspection of Figs. 3 and 4 it will be seen that an annular space or chanhe] is provided between the inner sides of the circular row of teeth 12 on the line spacing wheel and the outer face of the platen head 6; the outer peripheral face of the hub or extension of the line spacing wheel forming the bottom wall of said annular channel. A handcontrolled sheet metal detent-releasing device, designated as a whole by the refer ence numeral 21, is received in the above mentioned annular channel. Thus, the releasing device is provided with a circular opening 22 by which it may be seated and receive a bearing on the hub 20 of the es capement wheel to turn a limited extent around the axis of the platen. The releas ing device is provided with a rearwardly extending arm 23 that terminates in a linger piece 24 by which the releasing device may be actuated. The front edge of the releasing device is provided with two notches, recesses or depressions 25 and 26 in which the detent roller 16 is adapted to be received, the i'ingers 27 and 28 limiting the motion of the releasing device in opposite directions and insuring the positioning of the roller detent in one or the other of the recesses 25 or 26. When the releasing device is in the normal position shown in Fig. 1, the roller detent 16 will engage between two adjacent teeth 12 of the line spacing wheel and hold the platen at any regular line space position to which the platen may be turned. When, however, the releasing device is turned to the releasing position, indicated in Fig. 2, the roller detent 16 will be cammed away and freed from contact with the teeth of the line spacing wheel, and will be retained indefinitely in such released position by reason of the fact that the roller 16 is seated at this time in the recess 26. It will be understood that with the parts thus positioned the force of the flexed spring 17 is exerted rearwardly on the releasing device 21, causing the forward wall of'the opening 22 therein to act as a brake shoe on the metal hub 20 of the line spacing wheel. This braking action tends to hold the platen (which at this time is released from control of the roller detent) against accidental rotative displacement from the position to which it is rotatively adjusted. It has been found in practice, however, that the braking action thus effected is not as efiicient for the purpose as is desired, especially when used on platens of relatively small diameter, such as are used in the Remington portable machine. For this reason I provide, by my present invention, further and more effective braking of the platen when the detent roller is released. Thus, I employ an additional brake comprising a brake shoe 29 with a curved contact face to fit the curved outer face of the platen. This brake shoe extends inwardly and overlaps the surface of the platen at the lefthand end portion thereof. The point where the brake shoe is located is to the rear of the printing line near the top of the platen, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, where it will not foul the paper as it is fed backward from the printing line. This brake shoe is carried by, and in the present instance is, formed integral with a sheet metal plate-like carrier 30 provided with an elliptical opening. or slot 81, the longest axis of which extends radially of the platen. T he smallest diameter of this opening is at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the slot andis such that it will just receive therein with a snug fit the hub 20 of the escapement wheel. This enables the carrier to receive a bodily motion radially of the platen to move the bralie shoe from the released, Fig. 1, position, to the engaging, Fig. 2, position, or vice versa, without any lost motion on the hub 20 in a direction at right angles to the line of the first mentioned motion.
In order to prevent the carrier from turning around the axis of the platen on the hub 20, I provide on the carrier a depending finger which at its lower end engages in an opening 33 in the foot piece 3. This operative connection of the linger 32 with the carriage does not interfere with the above Hit) vents the carrier and brake shoe from turning around the axis of the platen. The car rier 3-0 is arranged adjacent to the releasing device 21, and like the latter is confined in the annular channel between the teeth of the line spacing wheel and platen-head, here ubefore referred to.
In'order to control the brake shoe 29 and its carrier by an actuation of the releasing device 21 T construct and operatively connect the parts as follows:
The releasing device 21, which is preferably made of spring steel, is formed with a spring member or arm 34: by slotting the metal at 35. The lower edge of this arm is eccentric to the axis of the platen and to the axis of rotation of the releasing device 21 to form a cam 36. This cam coacts with a lug 37 bent outwardly from the carrier 30 and underlying the cam. The construction is such that in the normal position of the parts, shown in Fig. 1, there is no force, or
no appreciable force, exerted on the carrier 30 and the brake shoe 29 carried thereby. However, when the releasing device 21 is turned to the 2 detent-releasing position, the cam 36 will operate with a camming action on the lug 37, thereby moving the carrier and brake shoe from the Fig. l to the Fig. 2 position. This motion with a gradually increasing pressure to forcibly engage the brake shoe with the outer surface of the platen, where the most effective braking action may be produced at a 2 point mostremote from the axis of the platen. It will be seen, moreover, that the operation of the brake shoe in the manner described, not only cams it toeflective position but. that such operation is effected through the comparatively heavy pressure exerted through the slightly flexed spring arm 34. Thus far I have described two distinct braking actions, one produced by the brake shoe 29, and the other in transmit-'- ting the force ofthe detentspring 17 to the hub 20 of the escapement wheel. But there is a third braking action produced which has not yet been described. Thus, it will be understood that when the detent releasing device has been moved from the Fig. 1 to the Fig. 2 position, and the spring arm 34 has been flexed as hereinbefore described, the force of said spring arm and the camming action effected thereby,-tends to force the lower wall of the'opening 22in the releasing device up with a gradually increasing pressure and with considerable force against the hub 20 of the line spacing wheel, thereby resulting in the application of a third brake to the platen.
While the drawings show the parts on an enlarged scale it will be understood that in practice there need be only a bare clearance betweenthe brake shoe29 and the platen when the former is in the released position. Of course it will be understood that when the releasing device 21 is returned from the actuated, Fig 2, position to the normal, Fig. 1, position, the three brakes will be released from the 'platenor the part 20 fixed to turn therewith, and by the same operation the spring pressed roller detent 16 will be returned to engaging position with .the teeth 12 of the line spacing wheel. It will be seen that by my present invention the construction. comprising the two sheet metal members 21 and 30, constitutes a very simple, compact, and highly efiicient variable, irregular or fractional line spacing mechanism which may be manufactured and assembled at small cost, and may be readily embodied in existing IDZlChlIlQS, such as. the
Remington portable, Withoutmodifying, or materially modifying, the structural features of said machines as they now exist.
The 'inexpensiveness, compactness, and simplicity of the construction, while imporis effected 'tant factors in all typewriting machines, is
particularly so in light, portable machines in which there is but little room to mount the parts.
Various changes may be made in the construction, and parts thereof may be employed without others, without departing from my invention as itis defined in the accompanying claims.

means for releasing said detent and by the same operation applying said plurality of brakes to the platen, the application of'at least one of said brakes being effected by the manual force employed to actuatesaid releasing means in orderto eifectively hold the I platen against accidental displacement from any line spacing position to which itmay be moved. j.
2. Ina typewriting or. like. machine,fthe combination of a platen, a linespacing wheel, a detent therefor, a plurality of brakes, one
applicable-to the surfaceof the platen and another applicable to apart'connected to turn with the platen, and means for releasing saiddetent and by the same operation applying said plurality of brakes in order to effectively hold the platen against accidental displacement from any line spacing to which it may be moved.

In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing wheel, a detenttherefor, a brake shoe cooperative with the surface of the platen, a carriage for said brake shoe, a detent releasing device mounted to turn around the axis of the platen and cooperative with the detent to release it, and a cam interposed between said carrier and releasing device to actuate the former to apply the brake shoe when said releasing device is operated to release the detent.
7. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing wheel, a detent therefor, a brake shoe cooperative with the surface of the platen, a metal carrier for said brake shoe mounted for bodily movement radially of the platen, a detentreleasing device, a spring member intermediate said detent-releasing member and carrier, and a cam on ,said spring member, whereby an actuation of said releasing member is effective not only to release the detent but also to shift said carrier through said cam and spring member to apply the brake shoe when the detent is released;
8. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing wheel, a spring detent therefor, a hand controlled detent releasing device loosely mounted on a hub fixed to turn with the platen and effective to'apply the pressure of the spring detent against said hub and acting as a brake thereon at a point remote from the axis of the platen when the detent is released, and another braking means for simultaneously applying a separate braking action at or close to the surface of the platen when said releasing device is actuated to release said detent.
9. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing wheel, a spring detent therefor, a hand controlled detent-releasing device loosely mounted on a part fixed to turn with the platen and effective to apply the pressure of the spring detent againstsaid part and act as a brake thereonv when the detent is released, and another means for applying a second pressure and braking action from said releasing device to the said part on which it is mounted when the releasing device is actuated to release the detent.
10. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing wheel, a spring detent therefor, a hand controlled detent-releasing device loosely mounted on a part fixed to turn with the platen and effective to apply the pressure of the spring detent against said part and act as a brake thereon when the detent is released, a brake shoe cooperative. with the.

11. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing wheel, a spring detent therefor, a hand brake shoe mounted for bodily movement radially of the platen, and means for con trolling the movement of said carrier from said detent-releasing device.

In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing wheel, a spring detent therefor, a hand controlled detent-releasing device mounted to turn around the axis of the platen on a part fixed to turn with the platen and effective to apply the pressure of the spring detent against said part and act as a brake thereon when the detent is released, a brake shoe cooperative with the surface of the platen, a metal plate-like carrier for said brake shoe mounted for bodily movement radially of the platen, a cam on said releasing device, and means on the carrier with which said cam coacts to actuate the carrier.

combination of a platen, aline spacing wheel, a spring detent therefor, a hand controlled detent-releasing device mounted. to turn around the axis of the platen on a part fixed to turn with the platen and effective to apply the. pressure of the spring detent against said part and act as a brake thereon when the detent is released, a brake shoecooperative with the surface of the platen, a metal plate-like carrier for said brake shoe mounted for bodily movement radially of the platen, a spring arm on said releasing device with a cam thereon, means on said carrier with which said cam coacts to actuate the carrier through the operation of the spring arm thereon when the releasing device is shifted to release the detent, and means whereby said releasing device and the parts controlled thereby may be held indefinitely in their actuated positions whereby the act of releasing the detent is effective to apply three distinctive braking actions against the rotative movement of the platen, first by exerting the spring of the detent through the releasing device against said part which carries it, second by exerting the force of said spring arm through the releasing device against the part which carries it and third by applying the brake shoe to the surface of the platen.

In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen carried thereby, a line spacing wheel, a detent therefor, a brake shoe cooperative with the surface of the. platen, a plate-like metal carrier for said brake shoe having a slot therein in which a part fixed to turn with the platen is received to aid in guiding said carrier radially of theplaten, a finger on said carrier which is received and guided in an opening in the carriage to permit said radial movement of the carrier but prevent a rotative movement of the. carrier with the platen, a detent-releasing device, and means that cause said carrier to be actuated to apply the brake shoe when the releasing device is actuated to release the detent.
