RIB-CLASP FOR UMBRELLA-COVERS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHAR ES F. BURNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburg, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rib-Clasps for Umbrellas and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in clasps for fastening the covers of umbrellas to,

the ribs and it consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents an umbrella with my clasp applied to the seams and engaging the ribs. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of my device; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of my device, showing the mode of engagement with the ribs.

In umbrellas of the kind where the cover is removably secured to the frame by means of caps applied to the ends of the ribs it has been the common mode of retaining the said cover in place to tie it with strings fastened to either side of the seam. This is a very crude means, and it is the object of this invention to do away with the strings and provide the seams with my improved clasp hereinafter described.

My device is constructed of brass or other analogous material andcomprises a main body or plate A, adapted to lie longitudinally of a rib and provided with suitable openings B B for use in fastening said strip to the cover of the umbrella. At two isolated points in its length and on opposite sides this main body or plate A is provided with downwardly and inwardly extending rib-engaging lugs C C. These lugs O O are bent so as to form, with one side of the strip A, three sides'of a square, which operate as clamps to engage the rib, as is clearly shown in the drawings. The width of these plates is such that a space is left between sufficient to admit the rib when placed transversely thereto. The inwardlybent portions of the two lugs G O are in line with each other longitudinally of the device. It is obvious that myimproved clasp may be stamped from a single piece of metal.

In applying my device to an umbrella the strip A is secured to the seams on the under side of the cover by means of the openings B B, so that it runs along with said seams. The cover is then applied to the ribs and the clasps turned in a direction transverseto that of the seams and ribs, as shown in Fig. 3, with the open side of the squares before referred to in the direction in which the clasp willturn when it assumes its normal position. The clasp is then moved in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3, when the cover will be fastened to the rib. It is quite obvious that the tension on the seams will have a tendency to retain the clasp in en- I gagement with the rib.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-

1. A rib-clasp for umbrella-covers consisting of a main body adapted to extend longitudinally of a rib, and provided at two isolated points in its length and on opposite sides of said main body, with a rib-engag ing lug whereby said lugs will engage the rib from opposite sides, substantially as described;

2. A rib-clasp for umbrella-covers consisting of a main body adapted to extend longi tudinally of a rib, and provided at isolated points in its length and on opposite sides,

with a downwardly and inwardly extending rib-engaging lug, substantially as described. 3. A rib-clasp for umbrella-covers consisting of a plate adapted to extend longitudinally of a rib, and provided at each end with a downwardly and inwardly extending ribengaging lug, said lugs being located on opposite sides of said plate and having their inwardly-extending portions in line with each other longitudinally of the plate, substantially as described.
