OF SAME PLACE.
LEAF-PROTECTOR FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,328, dated November 6, 19 00.
Application filed April 23, 1900.
To all] 1077,0122, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID J. TAYLOR, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leaf-Protectors for Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to leaf-protectors; and it consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Hotel-registers and other books which are always open and in use frequently have their corners bent and torn and are otherwise injured, thereby resulting in great inconvenience in addition to causing portions of each sheet to become entirely useless.
My invention has for its object to construct a device suitable for application to the open corners of the book whereby the leaves will be held straight and prevented from injury, while at the same time the leaves are prevented from becoming accidentally turned.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a book, showing my improved leaf-protector attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a View, in perspective, of the device detached from the book. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the lined a of Fig. 2. Fig. at shows the means made use of to attach the device to a book. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of one cornerofa book, showing my improved leaf-protector attached thereto.
In the construction of this device I provide a substantially triangular strip 1 of metal or any other preferred material, the sides 2 of which are bent at right angles to the main portion and are for the purpose of fitting over the sides and ends of the book when in use. The adjacent ends of the sides are flared away, as indicated by 3, the pur- Serial No. 14,014. (No model-l poseof this arrangement being to allow the corners of the leaves to be free from contact with any portion of the device. An integral projecting portion 4 rests upon the upper surface of the open book and effectually prevents the corners of the leaves from becon1= ing injured in any manner. Integral with each of the sides 2 is an ear 5, the said ears being bent inwardly and inclosing the ends her of leaves, and the free end of the conuection 7 is secured to the back of the book by means of a pin 8 or by any other suitable retaining means.
The device prevents the corners of the leaves becoming injured and also holds the proper adjustment and arrangement of the pages. I
I claim A leaf-protector comprising a plate, a projection I integral with said plate, depending sides integral with said plate for fitting against the edges of the leaves, ears integral with said sides, a section of elastic material having its ends held bysaid ears, and a strip of flexible material for attaching the device to a book, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID J. TAYLOR. WVitnesses:
ALFRED A. EICKS, JOHN G. IIIGDON.
