Description
DCC- 15, 1931 w. c. HIERING BAG FASTENER Filed June 2o, 1930 INVENTOR ATTORN EY Patented Dec. 15, 1931 UNITED STATES VImre-NT opl-"FICE WILLIAM G. HIERING, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, AS-SIGNOR T0 J. E. MERGOTT C0., 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE Ynso. FAST-Enna Application led J'une 20,
ly, is inconvenient, and decidedly objectionable in situations when quick access to the contents of the bag may be desired.
It is therefore, an object of this invention to provide a fastening device for hand bags,
which, when moved to an unlatching position,
will automatically spread the frame members of a hand bag.
Many hand bags are provided with a strap fixed at its end to one side-of the bag, for the purpose of receiving a. hand to facilitate Vthe carrying of the bag. Y
This is a convenient manner of carrying bag, but it is objectionable in that it leaves the fastening device for the bag freeto be surreptitiously manipulated while the person carrying the bagmay be engrossed in other matters.
It is a further object of the invention to provide means for simultaneously -carrying i: a hand bag and controlling the action of the bag fastening device to prevent the theft of the contents by piclrpockets, etc.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, constituting a material part of this disclosure and in which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view showing the manner of carrying a hand bag equipped with the invention.
Figure 2 represents a sectional View of a hand embodying the invention, the bag being in a closed condition.
Figure 3 represents a sectional view similar to that shown in Figure 2, the bag being in an open condition.
Figure 4 represents a partial sectional view of a detailv of the bag fastener. i
Figure 5 represents an elevational view'of 1930. seriai No. 462,488.
a spring detent employed in the fastening device.
Referring to the drawings, in Figure 1, there is shown a hand bag having channeled frame members 6 and 7 hingedly connected, and attached to bag material V21. Attached to Vone side of the bag is a strap 8 designed to receive a hand for carrying the bag as shown in Figure 1.
Passing through'the material 21 of the bag and supported by frame member 7 isa pin 9, provided with an escutcheon 10, and having Va. reduced portion 11 having opposed fiat sides as shown in Figure 4, the reduced portion 11 being integral with a conical or. Wedger shaped head 12, the latter having a pairV of oppositelyv disposed notches 13 de signed to receive a detent 16 projecting downwardly through an aperture in the bottom of the channel of frame member 6. The detent 16 is integral with a resilient bar 17 riveted to the frame member 6 at 18.
Riveted at 23 to the bottom of the channel of frame member` 7 is a plate 15 having a recess 22 in which is positioned a spring 14, the latter being inthe form of a wire and having its ends passing through apertures in frame member 7.
The spring 14 bears constantly against the reduced portion 11 of pin 9, and urges the pin so that there will normally be one of the flat faces of reduced portion 11 in engagement with the spring 14. When the pin 9 isin such a position the notches 13 in the head 12 are inposition to receive the detent i or close `the bag, the fastening device is maist Si i3 nipulated by means of the ring 19 and the strap.
When the bag is closed, the strap Will lie over strap 8, and thus prevent unauthorized opening of the bag. It Will be also noted that Whenever the strap 2O overlies the strap 8, one of the notches 13 in head 12 Will be in a position to receive the detent 16.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a fastening device which will automatically spread the frame members of a hand bag to assist in the opening thereof; and also there is provided a simple means for manipulating the fastening` device at the 15 same time serving to prevent the theft of the contents of the bag.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative, of the invention,
of Which, obviously, an embodiment may be constructed including modiications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, Wha-t I claim as new and desire to secure by vLetters Patent, is:
l. In a hand bag having a pair of hingedly connected frame members, a fastening device comprising, a pin rotatably supported by one of the frame members, said pin having a conical head provided With a pair of slots, and a resilient detent mounted on the other frame member, said detent entering one of the slots to hold the members together, and adapted to engage the conical head to spread the members a art.
2. n a hand bag having a pair of hingedly connected frame members, a fastening device comprising a pin rotatably supported by one of the members, said pin-having a Wedgeshaped head provided With a pair of slots, and a resilient detent positioned to enter one of the slots to hold the members together or to engage the Wedge shaped head to spread the members apart.
3. In combination With a pair of hingedly connected frame members, a fastening device comprising a pin rotatably supported by one of the members, and a resilient detent mounted on the other frame member, said pin having a Wedge shaped head provided with means engageable by the detent to hold the members together, said detent engaging the Wedge shaped head in al certain position thereof to force the members apart.
4. A fastening device comprising 4a rotatably mounted pin having a Wedge shaped head, a resilient detent, and meansion the head engageable by the detent to hold the head and detent together, said detent engaging the Wedge shaped head in a certain position'thereof to urge them apart.
This specilication signed this 16th day of June, 1930. VILLIAM C. HIERING.
