NITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
SKIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 656,814, dated August 28, 1900. Application led October 4, 1899. Serial No. 732,446. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the .United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Skirts, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a skirt the waistband of which" may be adj usted to different sizes without any alteration of the skirt itself.
It consists of details hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a perspective view of my skirt with the waistband opened to its full extent. Fig. 2 is asimilar viewwith the waistband drawn up closely.
Arepresents the skirt proper; B, thel waistband; C, the lacing in the band; D, the buttons in the back.
'Iheskirt portion is runl straight up to the top of the waistband without seam or gathering, as shown in Fig. l. The gathering or drawing up is accomplished Ventirely by' the lacing in the waistband. The waistband B is made in three separate sections sewed directly to the Aoutside of the spread-out skirt, leaving a space between the ends of each section. Eyelets E are inserted at the ends of B and lacing O put through them. Then as the lacings are drawn up the skirt is gathered evenly on the different sides and the waistband is made to lit properly. The lacings are preferably so placed as to bring the gatherings one on each side over the hips and one in either the front or back.
A placket and a row of buttons I) are provided to enable the skirt to be removmed and replaced.
, In this manner I make a skirt which is simple, durable, and well fitting and can be readily adjusted to fit different-sized waists.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a skirt having the skirt portion A extended continuous to the top without gathers or openings, except a placket, the waistband B permanently attached upon the outside of the waist portion ofsaid skirt and divided into a plurality of separate sections the aggregate length of said band-sections being considerably less than the circumferential length of the' said continuous Waist portion of the skirt, and means for adjustably securing the ends of said band-sections together, 'substantially as described.
EDWARD Ei ELLIOTT.
