IMPROVED SHANK-LASTER.
@the rlgehule rrfemi in im tiges: dettes zztmi ma milking part nf tlg: same.
To ALL wHoM I'r MAY ooNonRN:
Be it known that we, LOUIS RASTETTER and ABRAHAM SIMCOX, of Fort lVayne, in the county of Allen, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shank-Lasting; and we do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference markedl thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view.
Figure 2 is a side elevation. v
The nature of our invention consists in constructing an apparatus for the purpose of shank-lasting boots, &c., which is accomplished by the combination of a self-regulating fulcrum and suitable clampngjaws, and a. lever which serves as a handle.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a shank, the upper end of which is .provided with a male screw, a, and is inserted in female screw b, which is formed in the socket in the lower end of the handle B. C represents a stationary clampingjaw, made in the form seen in the drawings', and is permanently secured to the lower end ot' shank A. The upper surface of said jaw is rougheued, as seen at c, and is provided with a recess, through which a tack niay be inserted into the leather for the purpose of securing the same. D represents a self-adjusting fulcrum, which is pivoted to stationary jaw C, just back of shank A, by means of ears d, which fit into recesses ff. g represents a projection formed by cutting away the metal in forming the recessf, and serves as a stop to fulrum D, as will be niore fully explained. Fulcrum D isl so'vcurved that it may fit snugly to the under surface of clampingjaw C, when required. The end 71. of fulcrum D is curved downward and forked, so that it, may take hold of the surface of the leather forming the insoles of boots or shoes. E represents a movable clamping-jaw, constructed in the form seen in the drawing, having its outer end formed, recessed, and roughened so as to fit the upper vsurface of stationary jaw C. Said jaw is also provided with a recess, z', in which is inserted a spiral spring, Said spring rests on the upper surface ofjaw C. and serves to force the two jaws apart, when required. Jaw E is provided with. another aperture, K, through which shank A tits loosely. Surface Z corresponds to the surface of the base of the handle. That portion of the jaw through which shank A passes, nearly fills the spacebetwcen the upper surface of thejaw C and the lower end ofthe handle B. Handle B is constructed of solid cast metal, in the form shown in the drawings, and serves as a lever when the instrument is in operation; also serves to retain, by its weight, said lever in position.
The operation of our invention is as follows: Turn handle B so as to unscrewshank A, which relieves jaw E. Said jaw is then thrown upward by spiral spring j; then pass the clamping-jaws over the edge of the leather to be operated upon; then -screw down the handle on to the shank, and thus press the jaws rmly on to the leather; then place points L of fulcruin D in the position seen in fig. 2. Next press the handle backward until the fulcrum D lowers the apparatus with the portion of the leather grasped to the position seen in g. l; then insert a tack into the leather through the recess fin, after which remove the apparatus by unscrewing the handle, and proceed as before.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shank A, handle B, stationary jaw C, movable E, spring j, adjustable fulcrum D, combined and operated as described, and constructed in the manner and for the purpose specied and set forth.
