Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.l
OLIVER J. WARREN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BooT-cRlMP.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,952. dated March 15, 1864.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER J. WARREN, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have Invented a new and useful Boot-Crimp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved form for the vise or clamp commonly employed by shoe-makers to stretch the upper-leather or fronts of boots over the form or block in the operation of crimping.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my irnprovement in position on the form. Fig. 2 isv a longitudinal section through the same.
A is a U-shaped piece, which I style the crotch, whose outer sides, near their ex tremities, are scored or roughened to afford a secure grip. These roughened extremities I call the inner jaws, a a.
Hinged in the manner represented to the two inner jaws, a a', are two outer jaws, B'B, correspondingly roughened on their grippingsurfaces.
The outer jaws,B B,terminate in shanks b b', for a purpose that will be presently explained.
C is a screw having a head, D, capable of rotating about the point of said screw as on a pivot. The screw C occupies an aperture.
a, in the crotch A, in which it freely slides.
The screw C also carries a wedge-formed nut, E, swiveled within a yoke, E', whose pressure against the jawshanks I) b', incident to working of the screw, acts to force said shanks asunder, and to cause the jaws B B to press toward the jaws a u and to grip whatever is placed between them.
Operation: The front or upper-leather of a boot such as represented at F, having been partially crimped in the brake, is placed over a form, G, and the screw C having been retracted, the crotch A is caused to straddle the form. rlhe edges of the leather being nowintroduced between the jaws a and B on one side and the jaws a and B on the other side,
the screw C is rotated until t-he wedge-formed yoke E begins to press outward the shanks b b of the outer jaws, B B, and the head D to press upward against the edge of the form. The yoke E', having thus been made to spread the shanks b b to their extreme limit, becomes in turn a stationary abutment for the screw to advancethrough, and, by pressing the head D against the edge of the form, acts to draw the vise bodily away from the form, and consequently to stretch the leather.
An obvious advantage of the above over the common form of crimper is the` facility afforded by the crotch for gripping the edge of i theleather when distant from the edge ofthe form.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The wedge-formed yoke E', inclosing the nutE and operating to spread the arms b b', in the described combination with the crotch A a a a2, outer hinged jaws, B b B b', andscrew C, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
OLIVER Ji. WARREN.
