Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. KENNEDY, of Greenburg, (Dobbs Ferry,) in the county of \Vestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved wrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
This invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, and has special reference to its use in connection with telegraph and other line wires.
The object of the invention is to provide in a single tool a wrench, a pair of nippers, and a wire-cutter. The invention will be set forth in the following description and claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, form in a part of this specification,
in which similar figures of reference indicate I corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inven tion. Fig. 2 is a side view with parts broken away and in section, and Fig. is a plan view.
In the construction of this invention, 1 indie-ates the handle of the wrench, formed with the main portion and the lever 3, pivoted to a vertical projection, it, on the top of the portion 2. The parts 2 and 3 when closed together practically form a single wrench handle, 1.
I On the projection land a projection, 5, at the upper end of main portion 2 is mounted a movable jaw, thwhich serves as the fixed jaw of the wrench. The adjustable jaw 7 of the wrench has its shank projecting through the jaw 6 and a square socket, 9, in main part 2, and is operated by a tlunnb-nut, 10, located in a recess, 11, in part 2 and engaging the screwthreaded end 12 of shank $4, 'nojccting into recess 11.
'1 he jaw 6 is formed with the open oval recess 13, in which is located and free to move the cam-shaped forked end 1% of the lever lVhen the jaw (i is employed as a fixed jaw for the wrench, it supported against downward pressure by the forked end 14 of lever 2, the latter being folded against main portion 2 of. handle, as shown in Fig. 1. The
movable jaw '7 is adjusted in clamping position by thuinb-nut10 and the wrench operated by the handle 1.
To employ the wrench as a pair of nippers, the jaw 7 is adjusted by means of thumb-nut 10 to a suitable distance from the jaw 6,which has been lowered on the projections i to shoulder 15 on portion 2 by moving lever 3 out from the latter, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The wire or other article to be held 5 5 being located between jaws ll 7, the lever 3 is closed against the main portion 2, thereby by the cam action of the forked end 14: of lever 3 causing the jaw 6 to be moved toward the jaw 7 and firmly clamp the wire. The wrench then serving as a pair of nippers, is operated by the handle 1. To give a firm hold, the jaws 6 7 are provided with a serrated surface, 16.
To employ the wrench as a tool for cutting wire, the jaw 7 is formed with a recess, 17, and a cutting-edge, 18. In operation, the jaw '7 having been adjusted at the proper distance from the jaw G, the jaw 6 and lever 3 are placed in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and the wire is laid across the jaw 6 below cutting-edge 18. The lever 55 and portion 2 are then pressed together, thereby by the cam action of forked end 1% of lever forcing jaw (i, and with it the wire, against cutting-edge '18 and severing the wire. It is obvious that the cutting-edge 18 may be formed on the jaw 6 instead of the jaw 7. It will thus be seen that a very convenient and useful tool is provided for line wire men which, while being as compact as a small wrench, will serve as a wrench, a pair of nippers, and a cutting-tool.
lVhile I have described a specific construction of parts, I do not intend to limit myself thereto, as they may be varied without departing from the essential features of the in vention.
Having thus descril kid my in ventien, what I claim as new, and desire to sccn re by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench consisting in a longitudinallybored stock, 2, the outer part of the bore being squared, the sliding inner jaw, 6, upon the outer side of the upper end of the stock at right angles thereto, a lever pivoted to said stock, and also pivotall y connected to the jaw for throwing it positively in opposite directions, the outer jaw, 7, having a shank, 8, extended into the bore, the lower end of the shank being threaded and the upper part being squared to lit the squared portion or socket of the bore, and an exposed nut on the said threaded portion, substantially set forth.
2. Awrench consisting in a longitudinallybored stock having an opening, 11, connnunicating with said bore,the inner jaw, (3,sliding on the outer end of the stock and having an aperture in line with said bore and a recess forming a bearing, a lever pivoted to the outer end of the body and having a cam-shaped outer end entering said recess, and the outer jaw having a shank extending through the aperture in the inner jaw into the bore of the body and provided with an adjusting nut working'in the opening 11, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the stock and the outer jaw projecting in front and rear thereof, of an inner sliding jaw also proj ectin in front and rear of the stock and a lever for forcing it toward the outer jaw, the inner or contacting face of one of said jaws at its rear end be ing cut away or recessed to form a cuttingedge flush with said inner or contacting face,
substantially as set forth, whereby the forward ends of the jaws serve the usual purposes of a wrench and their rear ends form wire-cuttil'lg jaws, as described.
4. A wrench con structed with handle 1, consisting of the part 2, formed with square socket 9, opening 11, shoulder 15, and projections 4 5, the jaw (3, with oval recess 13, the lever 3, forming the other part of handle 1 and having cam-shaped forked end 14;, pivoted to proj ection at and located in recess 13, and the adjustable jaw 7, formed with recess 17 cuttingedge 1.8, and shank S, with screw-threaded portion 12, engaging thumb-nut 10 in opening 11, substantially as shown and described.
