SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,284, dated May 22, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALES E. VAN AME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicating Sales-' Checks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in duplicating sales check-books, which are also adapted to be employed by travelingsales men as an order-book and by railway-offices for shipping-bills.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved duplicating sales check-book so arranged that both the original and the duplicating check, which are preferably differently colored, can be simultaneously extracted without first separating the intervening carbonsheet, which is arranged at the center of the book.

The principal novel feature of my present improvement is the construction whereby'the original and duplicating checks can be simultaneously detached without the necessity of first separating the intervening copying carbon-sheet.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement closed, showing the relative arrangement of the two sets of sales-checks and the thumb-notch in the lower set to facilitate the opening of the book at the desired place. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same fully opened at the place next to be used, the original salescheck next to be used being cut away in part to show the underlying copying-carbon. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the upper edge of the book, showing the manner of securing the sales-checks together and the manner of se curing the copying-carbon and also showing the flexible connection of the book-cover sections. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of the upper edge of the book closed, broken away in part to show the arrangement of the wire fasteners which secure the detachable check ber of the sales person.

The sales-checks 1, preferably fifty in num- 5 5 her, are ruled inthe usual manner for name of purchaser, street, number, and the num- VVhere my improvement is used for a traveling-salesmans orderbook or for railway shipping-bills, the checks are of course provided with the proper printed matter which will adapt them for such use. The checks are also ruled in the usual man ner, name of articles purchased and the selling-price of the same, and are also provided at the bottom with the card of the firm from whom the purchase was made, as shown in Fig. 2, if so desired. The duplicate checks 2, equal in number with the said checks 1, are preferably of a differently tinted or colored paper and have the ruling and printingthereon an exact duplicate of that on the said original sales-checks and are of the same size as the overlying original checks.

The carbon copying-sheet 3 is arranged between the inner and adjacent original and duplicate checks and is of a length equal to the ruled portion of the said checks, Fig. 2, whereby the operator can detach the adjacent sheets 1 and 2 by seizing the bottom thereof without first separating the said intervening carbon. This carbon-sheet has its 1 upper edge provided with a strong narrow strip of canvas 7,which serves two purposes viz., to so strengthen the said upper end that it will not readily tear out or become detached fromits position in use, and it more distinctly separates the original and duplicate sets of sales-checks, and thereby facilitates the opening of the book at the center thereof. The duplicate checks being of greater length than the intervening carbon, it is only necessary to catch hold of the two checks by their outer ends, and they can be quickly detachedwithout in any manner interfering with the carbon, which is not the case where the carbon is of the same or approximately the same length as the checks. By this construction a great saving of time is efiected, for it is not necessary to tear 0d the checks separately, as has generally been the case heretofore. The said original sales and duplicate checks and copying carbon-sheet thus arranged are secured together by a plurality of (prefer- -ably three) small wires 5, which pass through suitable registering perforations in the upper 4 endsof said sheets and then have their ends united or bentinto parallel relation, as shown in Figs. land 5. These fasteners 5 also pass through a proper cover of suitable material formed of two parts 6, the size of which corresponds tothat of the said checks. These cover-sections 6 are connected at their upper or adjacent ends by a flexible strip 4, ofv cloth or other suitable material, whereby my improved book can be laid open for use in. the; manner shown in Figs. 2 and 3, without any tendency toward binding, in a well-understood manner. The wire fasteners 5 are made in the form of a narrow loop, as shown, and of sufficient length to project somewhat at each end he yondthe cover-sections 6, as shown" in FigsT l and 4. This is an import-ant feature of my invention, for the reason that the projecting loopends of the fasteners permit the book to be'so opened as to have the adjacentends of the checks out of contact, as shown in Fig. 2,

- Asthe free ends of the fasteners arearranged upon the outer face of the upper end of thebook', th ey'can in no way interfere with the free movement of the said checks and cover-sections on thefasteners in opening'and closing the book. The back thus formed is secured to. the said checks by the said wires 5, which also pass through perforations in the said sections 6. Thelower cover-section 6 and the said duplicate sales-checks are provided with a thumb-notch 8, Fig. 1, to facilitate opening the book at the carbon when'it is desired to make an entry therein. While this thumb-notch maybe omitted without affecting the spirit of my invention, its use is a'convenience, though not a necessity. V

. Both theorig'inal and duplicate checks 1 and 2 are consecutively numbered from one to fifty and aresiinultaneously detached after each entry thereon, as described. If desired,-

the inside of one of the cover-sections may be ers, the duplicate checks, and the intermediate carbon of less length than the duplicating -checksso that the checks can be simultaneously removed in pairs without interfering with-the carbon, and which carbon is "provided with a strip of canvas, combined with a series of oval metallic fasteners-which have their ends disconnected so that they are free to accommodate themselves to the move= ment of. the leaves for opening and closing the book and whereby the leaves are made to lie flat when the book isopened out, substantially as shown.

3. A duplicating book consisting of'two sets of sheetsor checks provided with an intermediate copying-carbon shortened as described for the purpose specified, whereby a sheet or check of each-set can be simultaneously detached without first separating said carbon therefrom a plurality of oval metallic fasteners arranged as shown, whose projecting overlapping ends are adapted to prevent binding of said leaves or checks when the book is opened; and a proper cover.
