ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
GEORGE POWLEY, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BLACK-LEAF CHECK-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,311, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed October 26, lSSB. (Model.) Patented in Canada June Q1, [383, No. 17,032.
To all whom t muy concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE POWLEY, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of' Ontario, Canada, commercial traveler, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Black-Leaf Check-Books, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to devise a black-leaf check-book easily detached from its cover, and yet when in position is held securely in place; also, to devise a doublejointed back for connecting the two halves together in such a manner that when the memorandum-leaves are fastened to the back the portion of the back to which they are attached will lie iiat with the half of the cover on which the leaves rest, while the other portion of the back folds over the ends of the leaves and permits the remaining half of the cover to lie liat on the leaves, and the invention consists in the peculiar combination and the construction and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a plan view of a cover without the memorandum-book, showing the doublejointed back and the pin for holding the book in position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pad of memorandum-leaves, showing the holes in its stub to fit over the pins in the back of the A', with their open edges facing each other,
so that the tally-sheets O may be slipped in position. There is nothing peculiar in this kind of sheet, except that each book is supplied with two or more of theln, and, being kept in the keepers B, they can easily be removed when filled up and replaced by a blank one. It will be noticed that thc back connecting the two halves of the cover has what might be termed a double joint7-that is to say, the portion of the back marked D, upon which the pins E are fastened, has a joint, c, between it and the half of the cover marked A, while the portion of the cover marked A has a larger joint, b, between it and the part marked D. It will thus be seen that while the portion of the cover marked A can be opened independently, the memorandum leaves F, which are secured to the portion of the back marked D by the pins E, lie dat with the half ofthe cover marked A on which the leaves rest.- Vhen the cover A is folded down, the part Z) folds over the end of the memorandumleaves and permits the half ofthe cover marked A to lie ilat on the upper part of the leaves F. It will thus bc seen that the cover marked A can be folded entirely back without interfering with the connection formed between the back D and the memorandum-leaves. It will also be noticed that by use of the short joint between the parts D andA the book may be used either side up, which has been found a great convenience in books of this class, as it very often happens that the person using the book has occasion to make some memorandum-such as, for instance, the address of the partypurchasing a lot of goods, or the time the goods are to be delivered-for which pur- .pose sheets are most always kept in the back of the book, and when he has occasion to use one of these sheets all that it is necessary to do is to turn thel book over so that the part A will lie flat on the counter or table, when the part A can be folded entirely back independently and without interfering with the connection formed between the part D and the memorandum-leaves. This cannot be done with covers formed of but two parts, said. parts being connected by a long joint, as has been proposed.
G is an elastic band connected at either end to the back D, and passing over the stub ends ofthe memorand lim-leaves. This elastic band holds the memorandum-leaves in position, while the pins E prevent the book from shifting. The elastic band is also for holding the black leaf in position, which black leaf is not IOO bound in with the book, but, being simply held by the elastic bandnnay be replaced by new one when the old one is Worn out.
Vhftt I claim as my invention isl. A cover for ineinorztndunrlezwes, consisting of the short part A, long,` part A', and the intermediate short part, D, with a joint, ce, between said parts A and D, and a larger joint, Z), between the parts A and D, forming` the back of the bool; and connecting the parts A and D, substantially :1s and for the purpose specified.
Y V2. Acover for incmorftnduni-leaves, consistvided with pins E, for holding the memoranduin-leaves, substantially as described.
Toronto, October 3, 1883.
G. POW'LEY. In presence of- Crnis. C. BALDWIN, LEWIS ToMLI-Nsoi.
