PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVARD J (BRANDT, OF IVATERTOVVN, WISCONSIN.
SALES-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,173, dated July 5, 1904:.
Application filed September 12, 1902. Serial No. 123,078. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD J BRANDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WVatertown, in the county of J eflerson and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sales-Books; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has especial reference to duplicate carbon sales-books employed in mercantile establishments; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book embodying my present inven tion, the cover of the book not being shown. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of a portion of said book drawn to a greatlyenlarged scale; and Fig. 3 is a plan view illustrating a different form of carbon-sheet from that illustrated in the preceding views, together with a view of a portion of the removable-leaf below said carbon-sheet, this view being on a considerably-reduced scale. I
Heretofore sales-books for the purpose indicated have been made in a variety of ways, one of the most generally used forms having removable leaves made of double length and with half of this sheet folded back over a sheet of carbon-paper, the latter being thus interposed between the two sections of the doubled leaf, this style of book requiring the adjusting of the double leaf over the carbon-sheet each time the book is to be used; and the principal object of my present invention is to simplify and improve the construction and cheapen the cost of a book for this general purpose.
Referring by letter to the drawings, a a a represent what I term the original leaves, or those on which the writing, as by a leadpencil, is done in the use of the book, and Z) 6 I) what I term the duplicate leaves, or those which receive the impressions from the central carbon-sheet 0. The leaves a a a (which are preferably partly printed, as is usual in books of this class) are by choice made from white paper, and the duplicate leaves Z) I) b preferably of colored paper, the two sets of leaves being each consecutively numbered from the center, the leaves next and on each side of the carbon-sheet being each numbered 1, the next succeeding leaves in both sets being numbered 2, and so on. All these leaves of both sets and the central carbonsheet are permanently secured together, as by Wire staples (Z (Z (Z or stitching, as preferred, and each set of the leaves a a and b b are further transversely perforated or deeply indented, as indicated at 6, adjacent to their rear edges, so as to leave narrow stubs (marked a and 6) back of said transverse lines of perforations or indentations, through which stubs the said fastening, as d, takes place.
The carbon-sheets 0, while securely held by the fastening (Z, are free from any perforations or indentations and are of less area than that of the described leaves a a and b 6. These carbonsheets may be either somewhat shorter than the said leaves, as indicated in Fig. 1, or may be of generally equal length and have one of their outer corners cut ofi, as shown at f in Fig. 3, this reduction of area of the carbonsheets being for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
In the use of my books the leaves next the central carbon-sheet c are first utilized, the described color arrangement facilitating finding the center of the book and distinguishes the original from the duplicate leaves. The upper or original leaf l is first written upon, the lower or duplicate leaf 1 receiving the impression in the ordinary manner. Then the two leaves l are held tightly together at the outer edge or corner and a quick pull given, which causes said leaves to separate from their stubs at the line of their transverse perforations or indentations a, so that these leaves can be thus quickly and easily removed (the other hand of the operator firmly holding the stub end of the book) without in any way disturbing the central carbonsheet 0, this operation leaving the leaf (0 mark ed 2 above the carbon-sheet 0, with the leaf 5 marked 2 below the said carbon-sheet, ready for the next entry, and so on till the entire book is used up. The book ready for use is shown in Fig. l, and in Fig. 2 (which is drawn to about double the scale of the preceding figure) I have shown two leaves of each set undisturbed and the stubs of leaves 1 and 2 or each set after the leaves themselves have been removed; but I have not deemed it necessary to indicate the usual printing on the leaves a a, which, further, would naturally vary according to the fancy or system of the particular establishment in which the books were to be employed. By reason of the said central carbon-sheet c being of less length or area than the length or area of the detachable leaves a b above and below the carbon-sheet the adjacent pair of leaves can be grasped at their outer ends or corners and be detached by a single sharp pull,
- as described, without any disturbance of the said carbon-sheet, which is permanently secured to the book, without perforations, and which lies loosely between the two adjacent sheets, and hence is not in any way caught or held by the pinching together of the eX- treme outer ends or corners of the said adjacent leaves in their removal, as described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sales-book consisting of series of original and duplicate leaves made separable from their stubs by transverse weakened lines, all of the original leaves being together in one group and all of one color, and all of the duplicate leaves being together in another group, and all of another color, and the two groups being separated by a central permanent carbon-sheet of less area than that of the leaves, all of the foregoing being bound together through the stubs of said leaves and through the inner end of the permanent central carbon-sheet.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Vis consin, in the presence of two witnesses.
