To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALLEN JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Carnegie, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fans for Rocking-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved rocking-chair attachment; and it consists in a device operated by the rocking movement of the chair, whereby a series of fans are kept in motion, together with certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of an ordinary rocking-chair having connected therewith my improved device for operating a series of fans, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the means used for connecting the device to the rockers of the chair. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of a portion of the socket through which the threaded rod operates. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a portion of the threaded rod for operating the fans.

To put my invention into practice and thereby provide a device capable of being con nected to a rocking-chair by means of which the occupant of the chair may fan himself by simply rocking the chair, I form from suit able material a clamp consisting of a bar 2, provided at either end with adjustable portions 5, by means of which the said bar may be elongated to fit or span the rockers 12 of any rocking-chair. Each of these adjustable portions is fitted with a slotted clamp 3 and thumb-screw 4:, which afford a means for rigidly attaching the bar 2 to the rockers of the chair. Arranged in connection with this bar 2 is avertically-arranged rod 6, loosely fitted in its bearings and provided with a spring 8 and a base-piece '7. The top of this vertically-moving bar 6 is formed with a socket 9, in which a ball-bearing is operated, and the said bearin g is attached to or forms a part of a threaded rod 11, which extends upward to a point above the back of the chair 1, and is attached in position to the said chair by means of a clip 15, fitted with a thumb-screw 16. This clip is formed with a threaded socket 15 to engage with and operate the threaded portion 13 of the rod 11. The threads 11 in the socket 15 and those formed on the rod 11 are of a very steep pitch, and any vertical movement of the said rod will cause it to revolve. Arranged at the top of the rod 11 is an adjustable socket 17, in which fans 18 are arranged and the said socket adjusted vertically along the rod and set by a thumbscrew 20.

In operation the device is attached and adjusted to the chair in the manner above described, and by a rocking movement of the chair the end 7 of the bar 6 by the action of the spring 8 is kept in close contact with the floor. By thus keeping the bar 6 in close contact with the door the same is given a vertical or up-and-down movement in its bearing, and the said movement communicated to the rod 11 will cause the fans 18 to rapidly revolve about the said rod, thereby fanning the occupant of the chair.

Various slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. Therefore I do not confine myself to the exact construction shown and described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-- The herein-described automatically-operated fan attachment for rocking-chairs, consisting of the adjustable bar2 having suitable clamps arranged thereon, whereby the same may be connected to the rockers of the chair, the bar 6, actuated by the spring 8, and provided with a socket 9, the rod 11 loosely connected to the said bar, the threads 13 formed on the said rod, the socket 15 and clip 15, and means for attachment with the back of the chair, and an adjustable fan-socket 17, attached to the top of the rod 11, all arranged and combined forservice substantially as and for the purpose described.
