Description
No. 809,862. PATENTED JAN. 9, i906. J. THENSER.
ADJUSTABLE STILT.
APPLICATION FILED MAY19, 190s.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906.
Application filed May 19, 1905. Serial No. 261,200.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN THENsER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Caribou, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Stilts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stilts, and more particularly to adjustable stilts intended for sporting purposes, though they may be found convenient for other purposes as Well.
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable stilt which may be easily and quickly adjusted to elevate or lower the handle and foot-rest to the desired height.
With this object in view and such others as may hereinafter appear my invention consists in the particular construction of the various parts and in the novel manner of combination and arrangement of said parts, all of which will be more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
On the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view looking downward.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 represents the base or foot of the stilt, consisting of an oblong block having its ends curved up, as shown at 2, so as to allow a rocking movement such as is given to the ball of ones foot when walking. Mounted in the center of this block is an upright 3. This upright is provided throughout its entire length with grooves 4:, spaced at equal distances apart. The upper groove is provided with a sleeve or collar 5, clamped thereon and having integral therewith a sleeve 6, adapted to receive a rod 7, the upper end of which is provided with a handle 8. This rod is adapted to slide freely through the sleeve 6 and is secured at its lower end to a split sleeve 9, adapted to engage any one of the grooves 4 and to be secured therein by a clamping screw or nut 10, thus allowing for the adjustment of the handle.
The foot-rest 11 consists of a block having a toe-strap 12, secured upon the sides at one end thereof. This block is secured to the upright 3 and made adjustable thereupon by a U-shaped clip 13, which passes around the upright and is adapted to engage any one of the grooves 4, the free ends of the U-shaped clip passing through the foot-rest 11 and being provided with nuts or thumb-screws, as may be desired.
I deem the foregoing explanation sufliciently plain that the invention will be readily understood by all conversant in. such matters, the extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
Having thus described the various features of my invention, what I claim as new, and clesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An adjustable stilt comprising an upright and a rod, means for adjustably clamping the same together, a handle carried by the rod, an adjustable foot-rest carried by the upright, substantially as specified.
2. An adjustable stilt comprising an upright and arod, grooves throughout the entire length of the upright, clamps for securing the upright and rod together, a handle upon the rod, and an adjustable foot-rest carried by the upright, substantially as specified.
3. An adjustable stilt comprising an upright and a rod, grooves at equal distances apart throughout the entire length of the upright, a sleeve clamped in the groove nearest the upper end of the upright, the rod being adapted to slide in said sleeve, a split sleeve secured to the lower end of the rod, said split sleeve being adapted to engage any one of the grooves, a handle upon the upper end of the rod, a footrest adjustably secured upon the upright, substantially as specified.
4. An adjustable stilt comprising an upright and a rod, grooves at equal distances apart throughout the entire length of the upright, a block at the base of the upright, the ends of the block being curved up, a sleeve clamped in the groove nearest the upper end of the upright, the rod being adapted to slide in said sleeve, a handle upon the upper end of the said rod, a split sleeve secured to the lower end of the rod and adapted to engage any one of the grooves in the upright, means for clamping said split sleeve, a U-shaped clip adapted to engage any one of the grooves, a footrest carried by the said clip, substantially as specified.
