Be it known that I, F. PHrLIP BOURNE, otWilliams Bridge, in the county of Westchester, and State ot New York, have invented a Propelling Attachment to Childrens Sleds, 82e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part' of this specification.

The .present invention relates to an attachment for sleds or sleighs, by means of which the person or persons seated or occupying the sled or sleigh can themselves propel or force the sled along over the surface of the ground, theinvention consisting in providing the sled or sleigh with means suitable for the person or persons to produce the desired movement of the sled, when properly 'used upon the icy or snowy surface over which the sled is passing, as will be hereinafter particularly explained. In the accompanying plate ci' drawings my propelling attachment to sleds is illustratedfi I Figure l' being an elevation or view of one side ofthe sled; and

A, in the drawings, represents the sled or sleigh, which, in construction, size, and shape, may be of any material suitable for the purpose, or oi' any now in common or ordinary use, this invention having no reference to any peculiarity in the construction of the sled or sleigh, 'ont simply in thei attachment to the same of means by whichit can be propelled or forced over the surface of the ground by the person or persons seated upon or occupying the same; this attachment consisting, as shown in the present instance, of two handle-levers or bars,

IB, each similarly slotted for a portion of their length, and hung by such slots upon `fixed plus or pivots, C, of

the sled, one upon each side-frame of the same. These arms at one end nrciilatteued out, forming a circular disk or plate, D, which, around its edges, is provided with a series of similar picks or pins, a, sufficiently sharp to enter the icy or snowy covering upon the ground when properly' brought to bear upon the same, and thus obtaining a leverage or bearing in the same, enable the sled to be forced or propelled along and upon the ground; when raising the said lever-picks from the ground, and again inserting them therein as before,` a further propulsion of the sledcan be produced, as is obvious without any further explaination; the said lever picks being operated, as above stated, by the person or persons upon the sled. When the lever-picks are not to be used, they are `lrawn up into a horizontalposition, so as to lie along and upon the side-frames' of the sled, as plainly shown in fig. 2 of the drawings, where, by means of catches or fastenings, E, suitably hung or secured to the sled therefor,.-

they are held and retained; the slots in such levers enabling them to have suilicient play upon their pivots or pins of the sled-frame, to-allow a long stroke to he imparted to them by the person or persons occupying orv seated upon the sled. The leverpicks may be attached' to the sledgso as to be susceptible of being readily detached therefrom when so desired, or may be attached so as to be' permanent, the particular molde of attachment forming a part of the presentinvention.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The attachment of lever-picks B to sleds, sleighs, Ste., substantially'as and for the purpose described.
