CHARLES H. \VAITE, OF N EW BEDFORD, AND GEORGE D. BROWN, OF FAIR- HAVEN, ASSIGNORS TO CHARLES F. BORDEN, OE NEWV BEDFORD, MAS- SAOHUSETTS.
TOBOGGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,632, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed November 16,1887. Serial No. 255.355. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES H. WAITE and GEORGE D. BROWN, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at New Bedford,
in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, and at Fair-haven, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toboggans, ofwhich thefollowingis aspeci- IQ fication.
Ourinveniion relates to toboggans; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the same, by means of which wheels may be secured to it and thetoboggan be used as a pleas- I5 ure-vehicle in summer on a wooden inclined way, or be used in Winter on the ordinary iced incline by attaching metal runners to the wheels, or be used as an ice-boat by supplying a mast and sail.
Our invention further consists in the peculiar manner in which the wheels, metal runners, and mast and sail are secured to the toboggan, and in the device for guiding the same.
2 In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a toboggan provided with wheels, having the seats removed the more fully to expose the manner of its construction and the method of attaching the wheels. Fig.
0 2 is a side view of the same with the seats in place as it appears when ready for use. Fig.
3 is a side view of a toboggan having metal runners attached to the wheels, and Fig. 4 is a side view of the same provided with a mast and sail for propelling it on a level iced surface. Fig. 5 is a view of a wheel and runner.
In Fig. 1, which is a plan View of a toboggan provided with wheels and havingthe seats removed, a represents an ordinary toboggan,
0 having a circular opening through its bottom near the front end and two oblong openings,
at a, through its bottom near its rear end. The front wheels, in, are pivoted by their axles to the under side of the bar d, which bar is se- 4 5 cured across the circular opening f. The rear Wheels of the toboggan are secured to it by means of the bearers c, the wheels projecting through the oblong openings at n, as shown.
Fig. 2, which is a side view of a toboggan provided with wheels, and with seats arranged on its upper surface covering said wheels, shows the appearance of the toboggan ready for use. b b represent the wheels projecting but a slight distance below the under surface of the toboggan a. e e are the seats, and h is 5 5 an upright bar fixed to the axle of the front wheels, and having a cross-bar, g, by means of which the toboggan is guided.
In Fig. 3 the wheels I) are provided with the metal runners r, secured to said wheels by means of bolts or any other suitable means. Fig. 5 represents one of said runners attached to one of the wheels.
In Fig. 4 the wheels are provided with runners r, and the toboggan is provided with a 6 mast, 0, and sail s. The mast 0 passes through an opening in the curved end of the toboggan, and is stepped at w. M
I u I Having thus described our invention, 14%
we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Fat 0 cut, is-
The combination of an ordinary wooden toboggan having seats raised thereon, with four wheels, two front and two rear wheels, saidwheels being hung on axles which are attached to the upper surface of the toboggan, and whose peripheries extend a short distance below the under surface of the toboggan through openings cut for the purpose in the same, said front wheels having an upright bar fixed to their axle, and provided with a cross-bar at the top, by means of which the toboggan is guided, said .wheels being hung Within the outer line of conformation of the toboggan, as shown and described.
CHARLES H. VVAITE. GEORGE D. BROWN.
