BARTLETT & WALMAN.
a Hand-Sled.
No. 68.031. Patented Aug. 27, 1867.

gotten tetra igstwt @ffiri J. BARTLETT AND FRANK WALMAN, OF ORFORDVILLE, WISCONSIN.
Letters Patent No. 68,031, dated August 27, 1867.
mrsovsusnrm The METHOD or PR BLLING SLEDS BY HAND,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, J. A. BARTLETT and FRANK WALMAN, of Orfordville, in the county of Rock, and State of Wisconsin, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Hand-Sleds; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed draw ings, making a part of this specification, in which one side of a. hand-sled'is shown in elevation. The parts here shown in constructing sleds are duplicated.
My ihvention consists in attaching to a hand-sled a system of levers, by which such sled may be propelled by hand by the person on the sled; and its use is intended to enable such person to start the sled or move it until such time as it may reach a point on any declivity that it will descend by gravity. The levers may also be used on one side or the other, as may be required, for the purpose of steering the sled when running down bill, by holding back that side until the direction of the sled is changed.
The black lines in the drawings represent the position of the levers when not in use; the" red lines show their position when in action. A
A represents the side of any ordinary hand-sled, to which a lever of the second order, B, is pivoted at its lower extremity, so as to permit it to be oscillated vertically. The spiral spring C draws down the lever B, to which and to the'sled it is attached, and-retains it when not in use. The slotted arm D is attached by a pivot, on which it turns, to the lever B. The slot encloses a wrist, E, the head of which will not pass through the slot. This slot is curved, as represented, and the point of the arm D turned down, also, as shown.
By the action of these levers, of which one is placed on each side, the sled may be forced forward on the snow or ice, or steered in running down hill, as already stated. A
Having fully set forth the construction and nature of our improvements, what we claim as our improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hand-sled, when constructed with a. system of levers attached thereto, to be operated by hand, for propelling and steering the same substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses,
J. A. BARTLETT,
FRANK WALMAN Witnesses ISAAC Rocnns, THOMAS S. Fnosr.
