UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,670, dated July 1 1, 1899.
Application filed July 11, 1898. Serial No. 685,600. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. MCNAMARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a full,,c1ear, and exact description.
The immediate object of this invention is the production of a simple, cheap, and amusing toy; and the saidinventiombriefly described, consi'st-s of a tube having secured to one of its ends a peculiarly-formed section of soft rubber or the like material, which when blown through vibrates and gives out a squeaking reed like tone that may be varied according to the force with which the air is blown therethrough.
The-annexed drawings illustrate my said invention. a V
Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, thereof; and Fig. 3, a longitudinaicentral sectional view of the same.
In the drawings, the letter (t denotes a tube, preferably a short piece of reed or similar cheap and indestructible material, and b indicates the section of rubber above referred to. These sections 12 are first produced in the form of long pieces of collapsed or flattened tubing, which is tlfen cut up into proper lengths to form the sections b. One'end of the short section is then-expanded and drawn over one end of the tube a, the projecting portion of the rubber being left in its normal flattened condition, as shown in Fig. 3. T
When-air is forced through the tube a and between the flattened flexible walls of section b, said walls are caused to vibrate and give forth a peculiarly weird squeaking sound, which may be intensified or modified at will by. varying the forceIwith which the air is passed through the said section I).
Having thus described my invention, I
claim- In a toy of the character described, a tube having one end adapted as a mouthpiece, a flattened pliable tubing with its walls normally in contact, said tubing having one end expanded to fit over one end of the tube, with.
the outer end free to vibrate, as and for the purpose described.
Signed at Norwich, Connecticut, this 5th day of July, 189 8.
JOHN R. MONAMARA.
