TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONCERN:
Be'itknown that I, JOSEPH STEGER, of Vthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Whip Socket; and I do hereby7 declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, enabling those skilled in the art vto fullyf understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in whichyFigure l represents a longitudinal central section of this invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section ofthe same, the plane of section being indicated by the line x x, tig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a. spring catch in the interior of a whip socket in combination with la notch or recess iu the whip handle in such a manner that on pushing the whip down into the socket the catch drops into the recess and retains tho whip, and the danger that the said whip may be furtively withdrawn is materially reduced.
A represents a spring catch, which is secured to the inside of the socket B. The whip handle C is provided with a button, a, at its end, and when. the whip is inserted in the socket the spring catch drops over the edge of the button and retains the Whip.' Between the upper edge of the button and the but end of the whipan annular recess is formed, so 'that the whip can be inserted into the socket without taking particular notice of its position but it must be remarked that one or more notches in the but end of the whip would also answer the purpose to give a hold to the spring catch, provided the whip would he inserted in its socket so as to bring one oi' said notches opposite the spring catch. The whip is released by pressing back the spring catch, which can be done by a cord or lever from the inside of the carriage, and if the tail end of the spring catch is somewhat concealed, the whip cannot be furtively withdrawn from its socket. If desired, the button may also be provided with a notch, b, in its circumference, so that thc whip can be withdrawn if it is turned in its socket until said notch comes opposite the spring' catch.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of a spring catch in the interior ot' a whip socket, in combination with a suitable recess in the whip handle, substantially as and for the purpose described.
