Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
RICHARD GROSS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
WATCH-KEY AND TOGGLE COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,686, dated February 20, 1866.
To'all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD GROSS, of Providence, in the county ot' Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improvedv Watch-Key and Toggle Gombined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Flgure l is a side view ot' my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of the key detached from the toggle for the purpose of winding the Watch.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the three figures.
This invention consists in the combination, With the toggle ofa Watch-chain, of a key for Winding the Watch, the said key being concealed within the toggle so as to prevent dust, 85o., from getting into the key-hole, the uniformityrof the toggle being perfect throughout.
'Io enable others to understand my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
The toggle is made in two parts, A B, it being divided on one side of the ferrule portion a, to which the chain is attached. The part A forms the socket. The part B carries the Watch-key C, one portion, b, of which is made so that it will fit closely into the socket, and the other, c, so that it Will perform the office of an ordinary Watch-key, and I prefer to make this end ot' some harderl metal than gold, say steel, as shown in Fig. 2.
The principal objects gained by this toggle and watch-key combined are these: The toggle in external appearance is in no Wise changed, both ends being alike, and it can, of course, be made of any desired pattern. The key is entirely concealed, and this is important, for if the winding end of a Watch-key be exposed it is always liable to get dirt Within it, and this, when applying the key to the Watch, drops down into the Works. By this invention the key is always concealed, and this cannot happen; but it serves a double pur pose, that of being a part of the toggle and also a Watch-key. Furthermore, the key, when used, is separate from any other attachment, and this facilitates the Winding of the Watch.
What I cla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A watch-key and toggle combined in such manner that the key shall be concealed within the toggle, substantially as speciied.
RICHARD GROSS.
