Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
SAML. SHORT AND ELIPHALET S. SORIPTURE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,742, dated October 31, 1865.
To all Whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL SHORT and ELIPHALET S. SCRIPTURE, ot' Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Bottom Machine-Oilers, and we do declare the following,r to be a full, clear, and correct description ofthe same, rett-rence being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, in which- Figure lis a View of the bottom of our proved machine-oiler; Fig. 2, detached View ot loop-formed thumb-piece and spring` employed.
In the dran ings like parts ofthe invention are designated by the same letters of reference.
The present application for Letters Patent embraces certain improvements in the oil-can patented by E. S. Scripture, February 25, 1862, by the employment of which improvements the cost of manufacture is very materially reduced.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use our improvements, we will speak of' the same.
A shows theiiexible bottom of an oil-can, to the center ot' which is soldered a loop-formed thumb-piece, B.
C shows the slip or sliding spring passing through an aperture formed in the loop-formed thumb-piece B to receive it, which spring' O serves to keep the tlexible bottom A extended in proportion to the strength of the spring C.
The can being,` thus constructed, the peculiar' advantages we would cla-im for the same over theoil-can patented February 25,1862, are economy ot' manufacture, celerity and simplicity of application, and the readiness and ease with which the loop-formed thumb-piece may be removed, either that it or the flexible bottom may be repaired. Hence the flexible bottom may be made to have any degree of flexible movement.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the flexible bottom A, the loop-shaped thumb-piece B, and spring O, when the same shall be combined in the manner and for the.pnrp'ose specited.
