Be it known that I, HENRY G. SCHRENK- EISEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county ofNew York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Article of Convertible' Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved article of furniture constructed and adapted for use Convertibly as a divan' or couch, bed-couch, and easy or invalid reclining-chair; and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure 1 is a perspective view of an article of furniture constructed inaccordance with my invention, but devoid of upholstering. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the article upholstered and in condition for use asa couch. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, illustrating the article adjusted for use as a reclining or invalid chair. Fig. .Lis a detail of the toothed segments and toothed wheels cooperating therewith, and Fig. 5 a sectional detail of the same and the guide for the segments. Fig. G is a detail illustrating the retaining-dog in engagement with the toothed segments.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the body of the article. of furniture, which is box-like and preferably rectangular in form and open at its upper end to provide a receptacle 2 for the storage of the usual coverings and other appurtenances of a bed. The body 1 is provided with a hinged cover 8, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the upper side of which is upholstered, as at 4.

The extension-frame 5 is hinged to the body 1, as at 10, and is provided with two toothed segments 11, rigidly secured to and movable with said frame 5 and passing through slots provided therefor in the end of the body 1 and into guide-brackets 12, secured to the sides of the receptacle 2,.whereby said segments are accurately guided in their movements.

J ournaled in the sides of the body 1 is an axle 13, provided with two toothed wheels 14, which mesh with the two segments 1l, extending from the hinged ,extension-frame 5 in order to insure the accurate and equal movement of the segments in the elevation and depression of said hinged frame. A suitable dog 11 serves to retain thesegments 11 and hinged frame 5 in the several positions to which they are manually adjusted by manipulating a hand-wheel 15, carried on the eX- posed end of the axle 13. of the drawings in order that the article of furniture may serve as an invalid or'easy chair and, as in Fig. 2, is adapted to be adjusted to the plane of the body 1 in order that it may serve as a bed-couch, as illustrated in said figure of the drawings, when the head-rest now to be described is properly adj usted. This hinged frame 5 is provided with a hinged head-rest 16, having toothed segments 17, rigidly secured thereto and depend- This hinged ing therefrom along the inner side of the'side members of said hinged frame, so that the head-rest may be 'adjusted with relation to the hinged section 5 and the box-like receptacle 1 independently of the hinged section in order that thearticle may serve as a bedlounge or bed-couch. By my invention I provide an improved article of furniture which, as illustrated in the drawings, is adapted for adjustment to serve as a bed lounge or couch, as a couch, or as a reclining,easy,or invalid chair,and which is provided with a receptacle for the storage of the usual and necessary appurtenances and coverings of a bed, and it is exteriorly suitably upholstered to present a neat appearance.

It is obvious that the article of furniture may be adjusted to serve as a one-arm divan by turning the hinged section 16 to a position substantially perpendicular to the body 1 and that it is capable of other adjustments to accommodate the convenience of the user.

It will be noted that in my invention the frame 5 is hinged to the exterior of the body l independent of the hinged cover of the body and that it may be adjusted to different positions with relation to said body while the cover remains closed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- As a new article of manufacture a couch consisting of a body provided with guide# brackets, an axle carrying toothed wheels,the end wall of said body provided with holes leading to said guide-brackets, in combination With a frame provided with toothed segments rigidly secured thereto the free ends of which segments pass through the holes in the end of the body into the guide-brackets and intermesh with the toothed wheels,where by said frame may be adjusted to various positions relatively to the body of the couch, substantially as described.
